Also got the cowl creaks but wondering whether to try silicone spray before the tape route. |

The dash rattles are because the build quality is dire - simple.
I've had my Civic for 20 months, and it's just clicked over 51,000 miles, the squeaks and rattles get worse from about 30,000 onwards, and vary in quantity/volume/type depending on the ambient air temperature. I swapped from a 100,000 mile 3 year old Vectra, a mate of mine bought that, and I was out in it the other night, now with 124,000 miles, and compared to the Civic, the Vectra is like brand new, no rattles or squeaks from the dash, and barely any stonechips - the Civic's getting towards more chips than paint on the bonnet now, but the dealer insists it's no worse than any other car - errrrrrrrrrrrr, yeah, right................ |

No - not so
There are a number of modern cars that I have driven or in which I have been a passenger that have been totally rattle free. Not all expensive cars by any means. My Civic was rattle free when new too, but soon degraded. |

I traded in my 56 plate vectra for the civic because the vectra had so many rattles, squeaks, knocks etc.
From new, it went in to the dealer many times over the course of many months to try to sort out a very bad creak from the roof. That got sorted in the end after having it for 14 months. It turned out that the roof was creaking where it met the b pillar. I don't think it was welded together correctly. After that was sorted I then noticed all the other creaks and rattles that had been masked by the roof noises. The dash creaked and rattled from numerous places, the rear suspension knocked and was getting worse by the week, the drivers seat squeaked like a trodden on mouse, there were others too. By comparison the Civic has an intermittent rattle from the dash near the drivers door, it had one from the centre air vents, sorted that with a bit of cardboard, and the suspension makes some noises over speed bumps. However, by comparison with the vectra, the noises are much quieter and there are many times fewer overall. So far I'm pleased. It's not a perfect car, but to be honest there are so many wires, connectors, clips etc etc in modern car dashboards that I think it is nigh on impossible to get one that is totally silent. |

Toyota Yaris, Mitsubishi Colt, The last generation Civic, Mercedes A class don't rattle as I have experienced all of these cars recently.
Oh and the Honda Jazz! The Swindon lot are useless, that's the problem. |

I drive a fair few different cars too, and find that for the first while, every car sounds quiet, unless it has a major rattle, creak or whatever, but it's only when you drive it day in day out that you begin to notice the rattles and creaks.
When other people have driven my cars, on their return I've said about the annoying rattle it has, the reply is generally, "what rattle, I couldn't hear anything". |

The cars aforementioned I have driven at length.
Plus the civic's rattles, or many of them, like windscreen cowl and headlining are terrible rattles/creaks that are loud and really show the car in a bad light, considering it's price. |

I live in poland and the roads are terrible but thankfully I don't have any rattles after 9 months of driving. I had the windowscreen problem that my dealer dealt with immediately and efficiently - thankfully.
At this point I am rather impressed with my car. I accept that the car will develop some rattles at some point but hopefully not for a while yet I think if people have rattling interiors it should be taken back to the dealer and ask for them to deal with them. It's an expensive car to be fair! |

I wouldn't try to rectify any rattles myself as I would probably make them worse so it would be back to the dealer for me. |

I had a very bad rattle but only at about 1800 rpm, typically when doing 30 or 40mph. The only solution was to drive faster! Joking aside I let the dealer sort it out. They spent all day packing out various sections behind the dash board and eventually solved it. I still get a slight rattle in the radio area which stops if you put pressure on the trim but it'a a pain driving with one hand!! Seems to be dependant on cabin temperature.

The Jazz, the previous Civic, and the (older still) Accord are 3 I could name as being either rattle free, or in the Accords case virtually so at over 100,000 miles

My previous Civic was a 1.7 coupe - 03 reg, and a really excellent car, built in the USA. Far better built than my 06 reg CTDI 5 door - FAR FAR better. I traded it in (and later came to regret that) at 30,000 miles and never a single fault other than punctures/wheel balance. No rattles, no creaks, good auto box, sensitive good radio, never a flat battery, no handbrake issues, lovely high quality paint, hard wearing solid fit interior ..... just a really well made car.
