Rattles on a cold or hot day

I really think these rattles are down to the dashboard design and the different materials used in it. Also I think the weather plays a massive part in the rattles etc. Compare a hot day to a cold wet day. On a hot days the materials in your car, plastics, metals, glass etc expand and tighten up. On a cool or cold day they shrink and hence rattle, squeak and make other strange noises.

I dread to think what my car will be like in the winter with frosty mornings. But then again maybe due to the temperature differential, i.e. cold outside and warm inside due to engine temperature and heating the rattles etc won’t be too bad.

Just my opinion, maybe some one on this amazing site is a materials expert that could correct my theory!!

In my opinion I would rather drive a spaceship with its rattles and quirks than a boring rep-mobill or other car with a dashboard developed in the 1970's that has had so much testing that it quiet but boring....

Maybe we could do a poll on Do you think rattles are worse A On a hot day or B on a cold day C on a wet day etc..

I wish I had! There were several reasons I moved to the 06 ctdi, I suppose in order being;
  1. Wanted/needed a hatchback/estate
  2. Wanted 4/5 doors
  3. Wanted a diesel
  4. Loved the new shape/design
The only reservation I had at the time was that there was no diesel auto option.

After 2 years I knew the 06 ctdi didn't suit me, had too many (admittedly minor) problems, no auto, and the novelty of the design had also, I suppose, worn off too. Hence I traded in.

Hi 3rd Honda, Is the Beemer new or did you buy used? Either way, I expect there was a hefty outlay on your behalf!

I think a 335d is my dream car. All that power, and 2 turbo's to tinker with..... Ahh bliss! Remapped, they're a distinct threat to an M3!

Temperature is a huge with regard to rattles and squeaks, the temperature change that a car interior has to deal with is huge.

Hi,

Had the same problem with my new civic, went to the dealer, they removed the dash and sorted out what was making the irritating noise (even on smooth roads), since then all is fine and the drive is far more pleasant. Let your dealer sort it out, you paid good money for a good car without rattles.

Grtz,

G.

Gotta agree bout temperature as ive only had my CTRGT 3 weeks with no rattles, drove home from work this morning to be greeted by a annoying squeek from behind the dash.

temp at 6 this morning was registering at 8 degrees, the coldest since ive had it. drove to work last night with no noises

BTW my previous was an 04 accord exec which had an annoying rattle from the roof trim which i cured by sticking a 2 pence piece in the gap between the sunroof and trim

Hi all,

I've been suffering from rattles too. In my numerous trips to the dealer, they've padded the dash, and fixed a problem with the suspension. I still get a slight rubbing noise between the dash and the windscreen. I told the servicing manager this, but he was convinced it was the suspension.

I only get the noise when the car is cold, so, in this weather, it takes 10-20 minutes of air con + driving to get it to work.

Needless to say, it pretty much always behaves when the car is roadtested.

I'm pretty much at the end of my tether. I'm just thinking about getting rid, which is a real shame, as I'm Honda through and through.

I love and hate my car, all at the same time.

If you put pressure on your dash with your hand, does the rattle stop?

What surprises me is that Wheelchair's car is fairly new? I would have thought that by now they knew all the likely problem rattle areas and have fixed them with extra padding?

or

Because the 1.4's are not as popular, is it an early build been lying around?

My car is 3 weeks old and it also has a lot of rattles in the dash.

MrLoz too bad the dash rattles so far from the window, otherwise you could pad it yourself, but to stop that rattle, you'll probably have to disassemble the whole dash

No, it was a new build, I always make sure of this before purchasing a car.

Personally I think the suspension is mainly to blame, way too hard.

It is too hard for my liking as well, but, mine is a March 2007, done nearly 16K, and I have no rattles.

"We've had no complaints about dashboard rattles so start taking some packing out to save money" ?

Hi all,

Latest update on my car:

Firstly, I used to get noise (creaking from the rear) on pulling off my drive (from overnight), and traveling over any irregular bumps (i.e. speed bumps). This was fixed yesterday. There was a rubber stopper (bump stop?) which had come loose within the suspension. Sorted.

The windscreen/dash rattle continues, but some work was done to pack the area between the dash and the windscreen. This changed, but did not fix the noise. I get the noise especially on poor surfaces, traveling at slow speed.

The dealer has conceded that the windscreen/dash fitting needs to be looked at. I'll hear on Tuesday as to when they will whip my screen out, and, hopefully fix this.

I'm feeling like there may be light at the end of the tunnel.

I do agree that the stiff suspension doesn't help if there is the potential for interior rattles.

I hope you all get some joy from your dealers, and fingers crossed my car will be rattle free by the end of next week.
