Unhappy A Mass of Dash Rattles!

My Civic was full of dashboard rattles this morning, mainly passenger side and rev counter area, wondering whether to let the dealer look at it.

Thing is, I'm wondering if the dealer tearing off the dashboard to find the rattles will only make it worse. Any thoughts?

Also, how would you define a rattle? If it happens only over bumps or on a smooth road too? I'm convinced that alot of the rattles are caused by the seriously rock hard suspension!

Anyone had a dealer who managed to find and cure their rattles?

Its quite fustrating as the rest of the car is utterly fantastic and I love driving it!

Join the club, all I can say is you are not alone. I believe you should try and do some of the fixes yourself i.e the windscreen cowl and tweeters being loose, both guides available on here.

Mine also started making some noises this morning, though more of a squeek than a rattle...I will investigate further on my way home from work tonight (didn't want to turn off Chris Moyles as he was funny for once this morning)

That's not taken long - only had it a few weeks haven't you? Did they all suddenly appear this morning? I've had my Civic 3 weeks now, and I can detect the odd bit of trim rubbing when I go over rough roads, but it seems to be from behind me. Mercifully the dash has been ok so far.

Yes only had 2.5 weeks and love everything else about it. I'm wondering if its inevitable to get rattles on modern cars as there is so much plastic and wiring, maybe I'll just have to learn to live with it.

I had a few minor rattles from day one, but this morning it just went crazy, thought it must be a different car!

There seem to be plenty of manufactuers who can build a rattle free interior. I'd expect to get more ratlles appearing as the miles pile on, but this sounds like something has come lose or something. Probably is worth getting it looked at.

Its because the civic's interior is so different and space age that it has so many little part and bits of trim. However I do not think it is acceptable that the materials used are not good at all.

Think I might have cured one of the rattles!!!

Inside the A pillar on the passenger side I stuck one of the dealers business cards in the gap between the dash and the A pillar, on the subsequent drive it was quiet!!

Lets hope it stays that way!

I have now located what I think is the main trouble, where the dash plastic meets the window on the passenger side. I've wedged a couple of the dealers business cards in this gap and it seems to be better. Although I don't think it will stay quiet over bumps.

Would spraying sillicone in the gap be a good idea? Or is there a good felt padding anyone could recommend?

Loving the car though, its fantastic!

Strange this, because I started getting rattles this morning after months of rattle-free use. I thought it was something other people got, and wondered what the fuss was about.

I think I can live with it though. That said, you shouldn't need to jam bits of card down the side of a car.

I know, but if it keeps it quiet i will be pleased. Will have to find a more asthetic solution though.

Most people go to the dealers to get the rattles attended to by mechanics. Your approach of going there to get more dealer cards is a new one

No, they put a business card for each person I dealt with in my owners manual folder, that's what I've been using so far.

Wondering whether sillicone spray or felt would be a better long term solution.

One place to check is the metal peg that holds the driver's floor mat in place. That works it way loose and rattles really badly. To fix, remove the nut, insert a sprung washer (split washer) and refix nut.

Bish, bash, bosh. Rattle gone.

Also, make sure that the rear seatbelt buckles are hooked over the retainers that are built into the C pillar. First of all they stop the buckles from rattling against the plastic trim, and secondly they keep the seatbelts out of the way when you drop the back seats.

The plastic glass in front of my sat nav screen has vibrated noisily for the last 3 months. Last weekend I fixed it by stuffing black felt down the space between the vertical plastic and the horizontal dash.

Now that rattle has gone I can hear the lessor rattles one of which is coming from the roof area. I think this is an impossible problem. Civics are made of cheap plastic everything.

It really is a shame that such a comfortable car should be spoilt by Honda's penny pinching. I would willingly have paid another £1000 to have had it screwed together better.

Second that entirely.

It is so frustrating and I'm worried putting it into the dealer will make things worse.

Yea, got some rattles too, above my speedo-meter and at the passenger-side. pretty irritating, because even when the radio is at volume 16 I hear it.

By the end of the week I'm going to my dealer for floormats, I'll hear if he can fix it...

I agree! I reckon anyone dismantling the dash will not put it back together again as intended - i.e. odd screw missing, etc. I think it would just end in much tail-chasing so to speak.

I have one major rattle in my car - seems to be from behind the CD/radio unit. I got so frustrated with it the other day I thumped the dash hard with my fist. Hey presto - no more rattle!

Still plenty of squeaking, though - mainly from the headlining it seems.

Mind you, I've noticed any noises are at their worst after just getting in the car, when the interior is either too hot or cold (weather dependant). Once it has reached an ambient temp of 20 degrees or so, seems to settle down a bit.
