Check System with the 'engine' symbol can I understand be caused by several (engine related) things including an 'invalid' reading from the oil level sensor.

My understanding is that had the reading from this sensor been 'low' - then I would have had a 'check oil level' message which would indeed have been reset after filling the oil.

Check System means that it thinks the sensor itself is a fault - hence needs to be reset by the dealer when he is satisfied that the sensor is in fact OK.

This is what my dealer has done (3 times now). This last time - Honda Technical told the dealer that there is a problem with the software (not the sensor) for which they are working on a fix at Honda. The dealer will apply that to my car as soon as it is ready. In the meantime - the advise is that should the warning come on again - check the oil using the dipstick just to be sure - and if that is OK either visit the dealer again - or wait for the fix.

Angry

ITS BACK for the FOURTH time now. As far as I know - HONDA have not yet released the fix - at least - I haven't had the promised call from the dealer.

I've now had the car 11 months - and Honda have known about this problem for over 6 months - and yet still no fix available, though promised.

Dealers also aware of problem, but can only keep resetting error code until the fix is released to them by Honda.

Now getting very fed up with this.

Had the "Check System" problem 3 times in 20.000 km. My dealer told me Honda has a software fix for this problem. They installed it two weeks ago. I hope it's now gone..... I'll keep you posted.

Phoned the Honda dealer this morning - and told that the fix is not yet released by Honda UK - and no date yet set for release, though it is a listed problem scheduled for a software patch.

Basically - I can at present waste a couple of hours of my time and get the fault message cleared - so that it can happen again, or I can wait an unspecified amount of time for Honda UK to release a fix - and get it installed and hope it works.

Neither very satisfactory - to say the least. Dealer very apologetic, but fix will be applied as soon as Honda do something - and Honda wont even give them a date.

Exclamation [Engine] Check System ON glowplug indicator flashing

Got this error yesterday as I started the car to go to work (after year of happy motoring).

I checked the oil level and it was fine although mid level now between the two markers. Previously it was much higher up 4/5.

I put in another half a litre of oil just to top it back up so back at top now.

But error still there (flashing glow plugs indicator and ALERT SYSTEM msg) and would not go away.

Any way after searching this great site - booked into Honda dealer Dutton Forshaw at Bexley (Matt) who was very helpful and kindly got me booked in even though they were very busy ; 1st thing the next morning.

They checked out the problem and they said it just required a reset of the system.

Annoying problem/visit but well handled by Honda dealer and quickly resolved.

I will try and check the oil level more regularly to ensure it is above the half way mark to make sure this does not occur again.

watch this space!

Ashi,
Better get used to visiting the dealers, I think resetting the system resolves nothing, other than put the light out.

pcr is quite correct - its just a 'clearing of the error message'

As I understand it - there is a bug with the way in which the oil level is measured. This can occasionally cause it to give an 'out of range ' reading which is logged as an error that has to be cleared by the dealer.

When it happens, it is wise to check the oil, but if the oil IS low - you should have had a low oil warning - which automatically clears when you top up the oil. This is a different warning.

I'm told by my dealer that Honda UK are aware of the problem - and there is a software patch being worked on. I have repeatedly been told this, but regretably its not yet available - which is VERY POOR, since I have had this problem since well before Christmas.

When the dealer clears the message, it will remain clear for days, weeks, or even months until the next 'out of range' reading - when it will again stay until cleared by the dealer. Mine has sometimes been alright for months, other times, the message has returned the same day!

I am glad your dealer (like mine) is helpful, but the dealers are being badly let down by Honda UK who are supposed to be doing the permanent corrective software patch. Please encourage your dealer to inform Honda UK that there is yet another unhappy customer waiting for this to be properly fixed (though unhappy customers seem to bother Honda UK not one jot)

I had the same thing last week. Was told that it needed a litre of oil so it was my fault. Like you I would have expected an "Oil Low" warning rather than an engine warning light.

I had one a couple of weeks after getting the car so know it works!

No - it's not your fault - it's Honda's.

I was told last Monday when my car was in for yet another attempt to fix knocking/clonking in the suspension that the (long awaited) software fix needed has just been released by Honda, and the dealer will inform me as soon as they have it at the dealership. Since they have been pretty good at informing me in the past - I expect to get called in quite soon.

I am puzzled as to why a software fix is needed when it seems only a few of us have this problem.

The new software was installed yesterday - you can see from the length of this thread how long it has taken. It only arrived at the dealer approx 10 days ago, and I have not had the time to attend until yesterday.

No error messages, so so far - so good.

Dealer also looked at continued knocking from rear suspension/exhaust. This has been an ongoing saga. Rear shock absorbers have been changed TWICE, exhaust mountings/rubbers/brackets TWICE, but the dealer confirms that the problem with the exhaust remains.

This results in the exhaust/silencer knocking/drumming on the car under some conditions (uneven surfaces etc), and a very pronounced rattle from the rear at start and switch off.

They are going back to Honda technical as they have done everything listed in the technical bulletins that cover this problem (which is apparently a known issue).
