Are there any after market shocks available yet?
Anyone tried them?

The new struts I have are ace. The car is silent, drives wonderfully and I'm really very pleased.

If things did go wrong after the warrenty period, they don't seem too pricey (well not end of the world pricey - £45 for the damper, £75 for the whole strut):

I totaly agree with you TC I do get the impression they don't care, very poor for such a big organisation and ongoing since production. I have put two people off buying one of these cars due to ongoing problems which is a shame as this is such a nice looking car and luvly to drive if you turn up the stereo!
Hi Pottsy, Out of curiousty how long did your orignals last?

Blimey that's not long, if every body has to change them at that rate when out of warranty honda will be making a killing in the shock department!

are shocks covered by warranty or are they a "consumable"?

Items that are "expected to wear" are not covered, unless there is a manufacturing defect. Replacing my dampers did not fix the fault though - replacing the strut/spring/bump stop assembly did (and that is not a consumable).

after fixing my civic's right front bump stop i haven't got any problem with front suspension squeaks. You should all check this out!!! I don't know if this is a permanent fix but my car is working as it should do. for the moment.

finally my right front suspension leg is replaced and the knocking is completely gone. Also the handling and comfort are improved. First they tried to fix the "schock stop" (brown/orange thing) but without effect. Now this fix was completely under Honda warranty and had no cost at all for me, even the courtesy car. So after receiving the car in March I finally feel I have most of the problems fixed.

There seem to be 2 faults. A squeaking/groaning which is fixed by replacing the whole strut, and a knocking/rattling/popping which is the bump stop. I've put an interesting TSB from the US Civic regarding the bump stops here.

My Nearside Bumpstop Is Duff, I Only Found It By Chance As Ive Had All The Wheels Off And Cleaned The Insides, Calipers, Checked Brake Pads And Cleaned Brake Disk Guards, And Wheel Rotations. I Remembered Reading About This And Ive Had A Knock From About 1 Month Old, Now 12months Old And 1st Service This Week. Checked The Offside 1st And All Was Fine, checked Nearside And Is Loose...great.

Will They Change Both Sides,,as I Wont Be Happy With Just One Side Being Changed.

I was told they will not be changing both of mine, just the guilty one. I questioned that they should both be done and was advised there really was no need. Goes in on Friday.

Hi Richierich/gray52

My went into the garage today re Bumpstop on drivers side. I've now been told that the bump stop is duff and the whole suspension assembly needs to be changed. But they will only change one side. Apparently this is Honda's policy. I'm not happy either.

Mine has been noisy again - looked today - yellow bump stop front nearside off AGAIN. Booked dealer visit and I'm going to insist the strut is changed.

Rear suspension also very noisy AGAIN, especially 1st thing, and exhaust rattling loudly AGAIN at idle.

Frankly - I'm pretty fed up, and I'm getting worried that these short term 'fixes' that last a few weeks at best will just continue to be applied until the warranty runs out - then I'm left with a noisy rattly car that sound like its done many hundred thousand miles. Driving over a road with many small potholes (as the roads here are) sounds like the car is about to break apart!

My Accord, which had done well over 100,000 miles in 13 years (with several hundred miles on unsurfaced roads) never rattled and banged as badly as this one does now at only 12,000 miles and 1 year old.

All in all very happy - silent front suspension is a major boon.
Funny you should mention the colour I thought mine were a brighter yellow after they were replaced too, I also thought the plastic gaiter was different also, the corugations were much closer together. but I wasnt sure, perhaps thats how to tell if the strut has been changed. There also appears to be a plastic collar around the bump stop which is attached to the top of the strut.

Does anyone know if the struts on the civic are different for diesel and petrol, since mine were changed I am convinced the front is riding a tiny bit higher, I wondered if they had fitted diesel struts with slightly harder springs.

My springs have 2 blue spots painted on them, what have you got on yours and is it diesel or petrol?

Hi Slowhand

The struts will be different for the diesel and the petrol. The diesel engine will be somewhat heavier and therefore need different spring and dampers.

Yeah I figured they would be, would a couple of you fine gentlemen have a quick look under your wheel arches and see what colour the paint spots on the springs are please I feel a bit daft going round the dealer looking under all the cars
