Jerky throttle response
This is a well known problem on the Civic, the throttle response in some situations is not smooth and it irritated the hell out of me when I first got my 1.8EX - even took it to the dealer who said no fault found. After a few weeks of driving I got used to it but sometimes when pulling away it will hesitate on the throttle. Also when changing gear the engine will rev in between changes of you dont get the balance of throttle and clutch quite right. All to do with the drive-by-wire throttle. Putting all that aside, the engine is superb and very economical, I am averaging over 40mpg on a mix of town and motorway driving, I dont thrash it but I dont sit around either - enjoy

Thought I might write something positive about the engine for a change

I just had a good run up to Newcastle today (anyone on here with a Black Civic reg.no ending with HTH or HTN on the A1 coming south?)
I took a few winding roads as well today to give it a bit more of a test today and it was great. One thing I've noticed on my 2.2 EX is that you don't really feel the turbo kicking in and doing much in 4th gear, feels a little flat compared to 5th and 6th which are great. So say I put my foot down, get up to 3rd reach 45-50mph in 3rd gear, I may as well jump straight to 5th where I get much more oooomph out of it. Is there some technique I'm missing here for getting past those "sunday drivers" doing 30mph on a single country lane??? Thanks. |

Try revving in higher in third before changing to fourth - have a look at the "optimum chear change revs" here:

I believe my renault clio has "drive by wire" too.
It didn't takelong to get used to it, but if i am in 1st gerar in slow moving traffic, i look like a tit when slightly press or depress accelerator as i jolt around a lot. Don't get this in 2nd gear as much (to the 1st gear extremes). I expect the civic to be similar to how i need to drive it. |

Yes, I had an 02 reg Clio, that had DBW throttle, too. That was the most terrible car I ever had. It spent more time in the garage than on the road, and it's gearbox blew up the night before I traded it in. Sorry back to the point. I have noticed it is very very responsive in first gear in slow town traffic. It is quite acceptable to coast in fisrt gear to avoid kangarooing down the road. Apparently, you should declutch before touching the brake pedal when driving in first gear, anyway.
These odd behaviors that might be put down to the DBW system can easily be adapted for. All cars need a slightly different technique to drive, and 'mind set' to some degree. The symptoms mentioned in this post are ones I experienced when the car was new, but don't pose any problems now I am used to it and have learnt the car. |

agree, its something you can easily overcome by changing your driving style.
I have done this. I did used to find when changing gear, it used to rev, (i tested this today) but i have also noticed that my style of driving has adapted to this. (had the clio for 2 years). Used to find it annoying, but once you get the technique, it makes for a very smooth ride! |
