geoff, sorry you've still got problems.

Would it be possible to invite the Honda technical bods. down to your dealership, to give the climate the once over ?. Surely Honda wouldn't refuse to do that !!!.

Somewhere in this long thread is the dealers reply after contacting honda
which says they are aware but don't think it's a problem

It wouldn't cost the earth, for Honda to send someone to check it over.

I never press the button down then i pull the parking break up. Neither does anyone in our family, never had any problems with any of our cars.. a -92 Carina E has 'suffered' 420k km's of this "abuse" and is fine with it.

Geoff. Who is giving you stick about your views? If that is happening, it's outrageous. You are the victim here.

I don't recall having exactly the same problem, but sometimes when I go to take it off its like a mousetrap and drops when you get near it. Maybe I've been lucky, will monitor it now though.

Sounds pretty similar to what happened to me.

Oh come on.

It IS bad practice to apply the brake without the button. It is not good for any car.

Regarding views on things, a whole lot of what has been said on here is completely off topic. If they need to be discussed, threads have been started already. And all views are valid and welcomed on here, but how many times must the same things be written? Yes we know the fuel cap had an issue, but it's been fixed. Yes, sometimes the tailgate needs a little assistance for the last few inches. So did my last Civic, as did my last 2 Clios. So what?

A car under a year old the handbrake should not fail

with the standards of driving nowadays the last thing you should have to worry about is your car running away
they don't like you leaving it in gear

anybody want to buy some wedges?

I think one difference on the Civic is the size of the teeth on the ratchet mechanism, they feel smaller than on other cars, they also sound very plasticky. I tried the handbrake last night without pushing the button in.

I've had a thought...

for those of you with slipping handbrakes - how much (if any) side to side play is there?

I tried mine tonight - could not get it to disengage at all without pressing the button.

When pulled up, I've got just a few mil side to side.

Just putting 2 and 2 together - others in the past have mentioned a fair bit of movement, and I'm wondering if in some cases this is enough for the teeth to slip off the side?

Might be getting 5, but thought I'd mention it

Hardly any. Also, if I try to reproduce it, I can't get it to happen - it just seems to happen occassionally. Which makes it all the more worrying as I'm sure the garage will say there is nothing wrong - but there is a very high probability that it will happen again.

My hunch is maybe a particular tooth on the ratchet is dodgy and if it lands on that one, it may be more likely to slip.

I agree about comments that if you pull it up on the ratchet, the feedback through the handle suggests that the teeth aren't very big, although it is hardly a scientific test.

It's going in tomorrow morning so I will let you know what they find (if anything)

Amazing!! It sounds strange but im so glad to know others have the same problem as me. Im in South Africa, and the Civic 5dr Type S is fully imported from Europe. I bought one 3 months ago and have experienced the handbrake problem a few times in the last couple of months. It usually slips all the way down a few seconds after enganging it. After re-enganging, it usually stays on firm...However, today I was in for a surprise. I parked my car on a gentle incline at a carwash and about 30 seconds after climbing out of my car, I heard a hard thud and the car started to roll back. In a panic, I jumped into the passenger side to re-engage the handbrake. The passenger door was wide open and made contact with a solid steel pole...the door was crushed flat against my fender!! I immediately took it to my nearest Honda Dealership to have the handbake checked out - not surprisingly, they found nothing wrong. I then took it to a second dealer and they too could not find anything wrong. Im now left pay the excess on a significant claim to my insurance.

I feel this was purely a mechanical fault with the car which Honda should take responsibility for. I often visit my sister and her 2 kids who frequently play around my car...I hate to think what would happen if my handbrake had to fail around them!!
Obviously there is a fault with Honda Civic handbrakes...3 month old Civics should not be having handbrake problems!! It may be intermittent and so hard to demonstrate at a Honda Dealership but the sheer number of complaints on this forum alone should be enough for Honda to do something about this. Please lets do something before something tragic happens. Any suggestions??

From my side in South Africa, I am thinking of approaching our National Motoring Ombudsman and the posts on this forum will provide valuable evidence against Honda that its not an isolated complaint.

I want a recall!!!!!

What I don't understand is that once again only some cars are affected
our civic is coming up to 6 months old and we have never had a problem

Both cars are parked in the garage at night and I have never left the car in gear just set the parking brake - no issues (it isn't possible to compare the parking brakes of our civic and CR-V as the CR-V has the auto box and so is put in park aswell as seting the parking brake)

Never had an issue with parking brakes on any of our Honda's or any other
make of car we have owned

I know I am not the only person to not have had any issues which I also know doesn't really help the folks that do

Although I am not going to argue with those numbers, surely it is the same design of handbrake on all Euro-Civics.
