Faulty handbrake ¿weak spring?
Hello, I am Edudat from the Spanish forum. I introduced myself sometime ago but do not write often here.
I wanted to ask you some questions abut the handbrake on our Civics, an issue we are discussing now. As we know there have been many cases in which the handbrake did not work properly and civics had accidents. In Spain there is one person that died because his Civic run over him and his family says it was a fault with the handbrake. Episods like this with the handbrake suggest that there is something wrong with this part of the car. I've seen some of these episods here at civinfo also. How many of you had any kind of problem with the handbrake? Second, we think that the problem is that the spring that joins the pressure button to the cogwheel fixer is too weak as compared to other vehicle's. This implies a soft action on the button releases the handbrake. But of course, this also implies that the fixer of the cogwheel does not have much retaining power. Thus the probability of a failure is larger. Not very important to Honda because they always can say that YOU forgot to accionate the handbrake properly. But even some hit of other vehicle parking could release this loose handbrake. As we see it (actually Morrillu sees it, another member in the Spanish club) the solution would be changing the spring with a tougher one. What do you think? PS: My handbrake works OK but I am not confident since I have read too many failures with it. Last edited by edudat; 6th March 2007 at 15:43. |

What would have preferred myself would be for the handbrake to have been on the opposite side to the driver.
I find it a bit too close at times. Still musn't moan, I test drove another car with a foot operated handbrake - dreadful. needed to be contortionist to get at it. |

edudat - very sorry to hear your news from over there
to be honest, I don't think we've really gone up with a solution to the handbrake issue yet - and short of taking one apart that has failed on occasion, I'm not sure we will. Although I'm sure someone will prove me wrong at some point! Certainly you fix sounds possible - but I'm not quite sure how it all hangs together |
