[Computer] current fuel consumption bug?!?!

Hello everybody,

I have just returned from a long trip with my car.This is what i noticed:

While going down a hill on the national road of my country, with no gear on the gearbox, the current consumption (the bar on the computer) was going wild!!!it was going back and forth from 5 to 10 for a while, then from 10 to 15 , then at max.
I was not pressing the gas pedal and the rev meter was at idle.
When i had a gear on the gearbox (6th) everything seemed normal - the bar at 0.

Have you noticed that on your car????????

If you were in neutral, as I think that reads, then the engine will require some fuel to idle, this is probably what is causing the spurious reading.

When rolling down hill in gear, the engine uses virtually no fuel. It actually uses alot more fuel in idle.

Besides, it's a very bad idea to roll down a hill in neutral! And why would you ever want to?!

To test the fuel consumption maybe?
Sometimes the eco meter seems to change if you change gear even with the clutch down; does it know what gear your in and does it change the reading appropriatly? Even in neutral?

I have a DSI! It's got an I in it as well!

HELLO ,

Bungle: i was just "playing" around to see the fuel consumption.I believe that you are quite about fuel consumption but that does not justify the "spurious" reading.
generationgav: the eco meter seems to change if you change gear even with the clutch down. I have noticed that on my car too.

Sorry if my post sounded a bit brash, the point I was making was that driving in neutral in not recommended, and therefore would not worry myself too much with the didgy readings.

I wouldn't be supprised if the car knew which gear it is in. It knows if a fly lands on the clutch pedal (turns cruise control off) so it could make sense.

On the subject of MPG, mine is so much lower than I was hoping it would be. I am aware the weather is unuasally hot now, so the climate control is working overtime, but I would still have expected >31MPG (mostly town)

I'm getting more like 39 from town driving, and 45 on long runs.

That's with 1300mls on the clock

From looking at your location (I'm sad, I know) you seem to live in the english chanel somewhere. Is that how you get such good economy? Does the sear-fearing Civic use less fuel with it's outboard motors?

Is that with A/C on or off, or just in Auto mode?

Someone else got the location correct from my coords.... btw - I live nowhere near there

I have AC on Auto Mode, for maybe 90% of the time. It's probably about the hottest place in the UK round here as well!

Just had a quick look at http://www.satsig.net/maps/lat-long-finder.htm and it looks like you live in a big field between two roads near a Y junction

Looks like i'm a sado as well

Ok my bad, didn't see the minus sign on the eastings. That puts you north of Salisbury. That's a strange format to get from a GPS device- if that's what you used. It is normally HDDD.MMM.MMM rather than HDDD.DDDDD and W degrees, not minus E degrees. I'm wondering if the Civic satnav gave you that reading.

The reason I am chatting about postition formats and GPS devices is that I'm a keen Geocacher. Google it, it's fun!

Back to OP, I must have a heavy right foot, or the extra miles your car has done has helped out. I am yet to cross the 1000 mile marker.

I too have noticed this just twice. Down a hill, foot off, where it always sits at 100 mpg, it was suddenly jumping around the left hand end. I just ignored it, as it sorted itself out. Have you noticed that the auto-reset of trip B doesn't reset the average speed?

Once I have filled the car up full I stuggle to get 44mpg. but once the tank is half full (or half empty) I can easily get 44-46mpg. Strange????

25 litres of diesel only weight about 22kg so I would be surprised.

Is it not the engine management just poping a drop of fuel in the engine instead of lettting the cars motion turn the engine?
