"Check System" message came on
Got up bright and early this morning and when I started the car I got the battery light staying on, along with a message on the display saying "Check System" I'm sitting here at the moment waiting for the local dealership opening up. I can only assume the alternator has given up the ghost.

I wouldn't mind betting you are right WoolyCiv, and you know when you get a feeling that it's not the last time you're going to see the problem again
I have got to say though, that the service I recieved from the dealer was excellent. They took the car immediately and after waiting a while they told me that they had to consult with Honda Technical. They hired me a car on the spot and I went on my way. The service guy kept me informed throughout the rest of the day and then next day phoned to say the car was ready for collection. I forgot to tell them not to clean it, as I'm paranoid about dealers scratching my pride and joy, but to my delight they had done a great job inside and out. (I gave it a thorough check at the dealership for marks before leaving!) |

I'm also having the Check System warning message which doesn't go away...you have to visit the dealer. Model: 2.2 CTDi Ex, date jan-2007.
4000 km - Dealer didn't know where it was coming. A reset fixed it. 8900 km - Today..the Check System message is there again. But even worse: the car is extremely slow, it takes 30 sec's to drive 100 km/h, no power at all. I will visit the dealer for the 2nd time in 4 weeks and will keep you posted. |

The last time I heard of Multiplex in car electrics was from Peugeot/Citroen on the 307 and C5.
The idea is that 'Multiplex' allows the manufacturers to use far less wiring in the car. An on board computer controls which signals get fed down which wires at which time. My old C5 had Multiplex and it was a real pain. Examples of the 'pain' was that you could press the button to fold the door mirrors and you could wait anything up to 20 seconds for the mirrors to actually fold. Same with flashing the headlights, once you pulled the lever it could be 5 seconds later before the headlights actually flashed. From what I could gather the on board computer had decided that other functions were being sent down that particular circuit and your latest request had to wait. No doubt the whole idea has been modified now. |

If the check system light stays on, I would be very surprised if the ecu had not logged a fault. I would always ask for a printout of the diagnostic log in these circumstances. Even if you don't understand it, it's useful for future reference considering that these intermittant warning lights have a habit of coming back to haunt you. I think resetting the light fixes nothing, other than putting the light out and clearing the log. |

I have had this happen twice. It can apparently be cased by wrong values from any one of many different sensors
First time 'logged' message was an 'out of range' reading from the engine oil level sensor. Second time was a 'low' reading from the oil sensor - which didn't flag ever as low oil, just turned on 'Check System'. Should have flagged as low oil first. On neither occasion was the oil below 30% to full on the dipstick. Both occasions necessitated an addition 25 mile round trip to the dealers to have the log read and the indicator turned off. I do not expect to have to visit the dealer every time it thinks the oil is low. I believe that certain error messages that cause the summary warning 'Check System' also covers various faults that set the system in a 'limp home' mode - hence the lack of power reported by some sufferers. I really do hope that this isn't a classic case of the checking systems being less reliable than the things they are supposed to be checking |

Jedi71,
I would expect dirty fuel to cause a much more jerky effect to what you describe, but inspection of the fuel filter should be a good indication. I can believe lack of fuel rail pressure might be the cause, or a hiccup in the fuel-flow control giving the effect of rev limiting. |

The check system error came on for the 3rd time in 15.000 km. Again, the car is driving a sort of "limp home" mode, also the cruise control doesn't work. To give you an impression: the 1.4 Civic is faster than my 2.2 CTDi
Latest news: I have mailed my dealer and they mailed be back that Honda has "special equipment" developed dealers can order to fix the problem. However, it's in backorder at the moment. Btw: my dealer confirmed that Honda knows about this "Check system" issue. |

Whilst 'Fiddling' I manage to blow fuse 10. After I replaced it, I now get 'Check System' warning constantly. Everything works fine on the car and it drives OK.
I only realised I'd blown the fuse when I tried to start the car and it wouldn't start. Is it possible that when it tried to start, it got an unexpected sensor reading and that all it needs is a reset or could be something worse? |
