Rattles

It's been almost half year that I got my Civic.

I really like the car, it's great... BUT (there's always one 'but') -
what annoys me quite a lot is rattles. Zillion rattles.
Coming from dashboard (plastic rattle), coming from right side (more metallic one, and is even heard on very slightly uneven road), than noise from back ....
Ofcourse, when going back to dealer most of them suddenly disappear.

All in all, this is my only grief about the car. It's just so annoying...
Car would be so perfect without those rattles.

Wondering how many of other people have same issue? Am I just really unlucky with that, or am I just too 'sensitive' about it?

I normally have music playing, so wouldn't notice any rattles, but over the last few days I have had the music turned off and listened out for rattles.....none. Pleasantly surprised!

More rattles than Mothercare for me, all from the interior trim.

My car sounds like it has done 100,000 miles.

It has done 15,000. Rattles more than my wife's 40,000 mile Citroen C3.

One of my main rattles came from the dashboard around the rev counter, where the 2 pieces of plastic meet they were rubing together, I pulled 1 off the sections of (The bit that gets scratched easily, and can be replaced with the type R one!) and stuck some door draft rubber stuff between the 2 pieces, that got rid of that noise so guess what, I started pulling at other bits of the dash and everything that came off I stuck some door draft rubber stuff on, and now it has no rattles or squeeks, result!!

please note: excuse my non-technical jargon, if you can't understand then if needed I will try to explain!

I had a really bad and annoying rattle start up the other day, coming from the passenger side. Turned out to be a pair of sunglasses my wife left in the passenger door pocket! Phew!

Other than that - no rattles

same problem here Nick. I HATE RATTLES!!....yes, it's fine if my car costs 5 pounds, but this one definitely doesn't. I used to hit my corolla with my fists in frustration. It's a bloody nightmare trying to find the source. Will be going to my dealer for my first service in about a week. Will set the ultimatum: Fix the rattles or I'll go to another dealer who will. And while I'm there I'll buy the new Type R from them as well. Have loads of problems with my dealer. The second closet dealer is about 40min away.

As I browse through this forum i see LOADS of problems with this car. Don't know why Honda isn't responding, or maybe they did. Am I missing something, somewhere?

I'm suffering from rattles over my right shoulder & nearside rear over rumble strips. Going to wait until I have a bigger need to revisit dealer before asking for something to be done.

I also get creaks from the dash when the aircon kicks in hard - annoying but not worried cos this is probably contraction of the vent etc due to fast cooling.

I agree, the ONLY thing that bugs me about my Civic are the rattles. The main one is coming from the passenger seat base.

The car went it to the dealers on Monday to fix it, but they could not hear it! They said they had spoken to Honda and there were no known issues. In fact the car was free from ALL rattles during the test drive with technician, but as soon as I got it home they started again!

Really annoying! Not sure what to do next!

PS The Jazz they gave me was a solid as a rock, so what does that tell you. Honda should not build cars in the UK!

For the passenger seat base, it is probably the Seatbelt tensioning piston, located under the carpet, nex to the seat (you will have to remove door trim, to access the piston under the carpet) The piston it ratling against the car chassis.

Thanks Stef! I'll look into this. Did have the same problem then?

The rattle stops if I push down on the seat (or some sits in it.) Is this a symptom of the problem?

Early Civics had a ratle coming from the seat adjustment handle (backward-forward) please also check this.
In my case it came from the seatbelt -tensioner system.
There is a piston that tesnsion the seat belt during an accident.
This piston ratled agains the chassis in my case, even if smeone was sitting in the seat.

I have an annoying rattle from (I think) the passenger door of my Type R.It is especially apparent first thing in the morning but seems to quiet down or go all together as the car warms up,only to reappear first thing in the morning again.?
Anybody got an idea as to what it could be?

Hi simflan, I had a similar problem with my wifes 1.8SE. Under the glove box there is a flimsy looking heater outlet pipe. You can easily move it with your hand. This vibrates a various Eng revs and makes an annoying sound. I put some double sided tape on ours and it stopped it immediately.

I am in the same position, great car let down by so many creaks and rattles.
It is going back on 31st March for the 4th time (I think) in 15 months to try to get them sorted.
The rattle behind the glovebox is one that has been looked a a few times......I'll have to mention your fix.
I would have a look myself, but it is a matter of principle for me....buy a dog and bark yourself?
I still have the Infinity speakers to fit, but I won't start until the rattles are sorted because they will accuse me of causing the rattles if I remove a panel!

Cheers,

Terry

The trouble is every time you book your car into the dealers you always take the chance they can cause more trouble than good. They managed to put 4 scratches on wifes Jazz sport when it went in for a routine service. They changed the clutch master cylinder on our 1.8 SE civic and didn't put the bulkhead grommet back properly.
