Paintwork Dilemma
Following a roof respray after a recall, I now recognize the quality of finish on the respray is far superior to the origional paintwork. The origional paint on roof was slightly orange peel whereas the respray has a mirror like finish. The bonnet looks cloudy ( not as bad as shakie1973's civic ) the paintwork on the doors is good, but again not as good as roof.
I am now considering getting the car resprayed, as I think it will look much better, plus I can get a couple of dings taken out of doors at the same time. Is this worth considering or should I just put the money towards a new civic for Spring 2008 ? Last edited by Willie; 20th May 2007 at 14:08. |

Thanks for the advice, I don't think that the bonnet is bad enough to get it repainted under warranty, so I'd probably would have to pay for the whole respray. I was given a £500-£600 estimate to get a ding in the offside rear door fixed and painted, ( I know it will affect trade-in value if I leave it) I also have a dent below the passenger door handle but that is a lot harder to see. My idea was to get a quote, (pointing out the problem with the bonnet), hoping that the quote would be favourable when the bonnet was taken into account.

It's depend on the way you will trade your car. If you want to sell it to your dealer dont respray... If you want to optimize your selling price to a private buyer and if the quote is not to high do it and integrate it to the selling price but dont be in a hurry to sell your car...

My thinking would be on how long you are going to keep the car.
If you are going to keep it for a few years then maybe getting it resprayed might mean a better price when you come to sell it, the paint will still be in a good condition, compared with our cars which will be covered in scratches and chips. As for how difficult it would be to sell on, why would having it resprayed make any difference, as long as you can prove it wasn't resprayed due to accident damage |

Foggy, it might be that a respayed car looks better than others, but the thing about a respray for me is that there will always be doubt as to why it was done. Why buy a resprayed car when there are plenty of others around ?.

Well dilemma solved. After taking advice from you guys I visited the dealers after work and bought a new 1.8SE Civic in Nighthawk black with leather! It wasn't my intention to buy tonight, however I got £11,500 for my March 06 1.8 SE.

Don't mean to worry you Willie, but having just picked up a NHB SE the paint work will still be like an orange peel.
I've never seen paintwork like it. The wings I sprayed for my wee MGB are better and they were done with tins of spray paint. I will be watching it closely during the first year to see just how bad it looks after washing. |

Your right Phantom, but at least there's a shine off the orange peel, lol. All the panels look the same colour, unlike the silver where the bonnet looked dull and one shade of silver, the doors another and the boot lid another! |
