Road noise abominable!

Hi Civic leaders,

Had my Civic 1.8 ES now for a month and cannot live with the noise - can all four wheel bearings go at once??? The car is terrific in every department, but after driving diesels for the past ten years without a noisy interior, I find I am watching for the next patch of smooth road ahead for a bit of relief from the constant rumble.
I ignored the test drive warnings I read on noise level as the Civics virtues clouded my judgement.
Short of wearing ear protection, has anyone tackled the problem with any success. It is just knowing where to insulate effectively without stripping the interior completely.
Mr Honda should be ashamed.

Eddie.

I don't find anything wrong with the noice in the cabin... I have a 1.8 ES with the standard 16"ers on an no problem at all. Probably not as quiet as our old Lexus, but this car is a bit cheaper, too!

Eddie,
I agree with you about the level of road noise and believe it is due to lack of insulation and underseal. There are two threads on the forum which might help, one about insulation and one about tyres.
Insulation - Sound isolation
Tyres - GoodYear Eagle F1 GSD3 91Y

Must say though, I have got used to the noise level now.

My wifes 1.8 SE has the same problem. We spec'd the car with 17" inch sport alloys. When I first drove it away from the dealers the first thing I noticed was the road "noise". Depending on the motorway surface or main road surface sometimes the noise is acceptable. We have had the car since December 06 and you do eventually learn to live with it.

What size wheels have you got Eddie? I have the 16's and the car seems a lot quieter inside than my old one. That said the old one was a Hyundai Coupe, probably not the quietest either,
