Stereo Power with No Keys?

Hi guys,

I was just in a carpark earlier waiting for someone so thought i'd turn on the radio.
I must say i was rather disappointed when it wouldn't turn on without the key.... even my cheap plastic ford had this function!

Just thought i'd have a rant...

Turn the volume down for some reason whilst driving, forget about it, leave the car overnight and one flat battery in the morning Mate.

Well i was intending that the car would turn the stereo off when you take out the keys, but my ford would let you turn it back on and would auto-off after an hour.

Last Ford car I had was a new Capri 3 litre.
Really thought that I was Jack The Lad in that one, until the gear shift came off in my hand whilst doing 50+.
To be fair, I suppose they have moved on a bit since then, ---------- Maybe. ?

Honda's standard seems to be - no keys = no power to anything

Windows won't work (ok, they carry on working for 30 seconds or so)
wing mirrors won't fold
radio doesn't

all not great, especially if you want to sit in the sun with the doors open, windows down, having a pinic and listening to the radio

because if you do that, you have to leave the keys in, and then all you get is the 'ping ping ping' - you've left your key in the car warning

This is one thing I miss from the Passat, the radio goes off with the ignition but you can then turn it on via the on off switch with out the keys it. Nice to have as you say if you have the door open it bloody pings all the time.

. . . and thank god for that!! Nothing more irritating than being subject to other peoples second hand music. You get enough "cruisers" with the windows down blasting the neibourhood with bass dross. In fact there should be a window lock engaged when the radio is turned on . . .

From memory it is possible to open the doors and listen to the radio but only if you turn the key as far a sit will go (as if you were just about to press the start button!) and leave it, once the seatbelt buzzer has stopped you should be OK.
Not sure if this damages anything on the car but it does work.

Does the seatbelt buzzer not repeat after x amount of time anyway

IIRC, if you leave the engine running as well, it only pings once!

From memory I think you can do this all you need to do is turn the key as far as it will go (as if you were just about to press the start button!) and leave it there, after the seatbelt warning beeps stop you can open the door and listen to the radio. Yes all the ingnition lights come on but it does the trick.

Not sure if it causes any damage to the car though!

I think this only happens when the engine is running and you are in motion, I know for definite this happens in this way for the passenger seat.

Not exactly, some car radio's have a function whereby after the key is turned off, the radio will continue to operate for a pre selected time (say 30 mins) this would be a good idea on the Civic.
I concur with others that not being able to listen to the radio with the door open (when cleaning for example) is annoying with that bleep bleep bleep,,
