What could this be?

My car has now developed a strange groaning, creaking grinding sound cant decide the best word to describe it but it as I bear left or right (mainly left) it is very noticeable at low revs and does it when going forwards or in reverse.

It sounds like it is coming from under the car possiblly connected to steering wheel movement or maybe the wheels. It does it whether I am braking or not so dont think it is connected to the brakes - will I ever be free from the dealership Argggggggggg!!!!

Any ideas?

It could be the lower knuckle joint - maybe?

TC - whilst this is not normally something I'd recommend due to scrubbing your tyres, what happens if you turn the steering wheel whilst not moving?
Obviously you will hear the sound of the tyres scrubbing on the ground, but it will show if it something rotating (drive shaft etc) which is causing it, or something to do with the steering...

Thanks TT I have just tried this, the noise now appears to be coming from the steering column or somewhere around that area but the noise gets worse the more the steering wheel turns to the left and as you come back to the right, by the time I have got to full lock to the right it has stopped.

It sounds like a rumbling creak rather than a grinding sound I have decided

welcome TC

Unfortunately, this sounds to me like a fairly urgent trip to your favourite place

If it is the knuckle joint, then you don't want it to wear and fail!
Although it's not normally a greased item...

One other thought - might we just worth checking that your wheels nuts are tight too

and one more ()
the other bit that is near the knuckle, and is supposed to be greased, is the tie rod end.

From memory, it was one of these 2 items which mysteriously failed on someone's car in here - but they didn't progress it with Honda and just paid for the replacement bits.

Not likely the accident was the side of the rear bumper back in February and that was a scrape not a hit.

More likely to be down to Honda's inferior workmanship and cheap parts

Tell them to be careful of the paint whilst in their care.

CZ have you tried doing what TT said, when my car is stationary and I turn the steering wheel the noise is quite bad, when I took it to the dealer we didnt need to drive anywhere for them to hear it and each day the noise is getting worse.

The dealer assured me everything was fine having looked at it. Could possibly be the nuts but there is no reason why they would be loose. I'll make enquries if I ever get some time off work!

Just guessing TC, but probably not the steering rack itself, but the electric motor that gives you power steering. there is a sensor which spots any torque applied by the steering wheel, and if it is over a certain amount, compensates by using a small but powerful electric motor

Probably isn't dangerous just yet, but I'd say the bearings in the motor are shot. It doesn't sound like the rack itself, as when you turn a steady turn, the rack is locked into one position, but the motor would still be applying a force to make your steering feel light.

Of course, once your PS motor dies, then you have no power steering, and your car would fail an MOT..

CZ try with your engine running, and car stationary, and apply a slight turn on your wheel, so you can here the PS motor straining slightly...

I would consider telling them you are concerned about the safety of the car in writing - that always makes the dealer extremely careful to fix the problem. They may replace the rack and various other parts while they are investigating just to make sure they fix it this time round (under warranty of course!) You might try for a better courtesy car as well - since you have been unlucky with problems so far (Type R ?)

Hope you have better luck with your car soon !
