Used 55 plate - should I be worried??!
Hey guys - this is my first post so go easy on me!!
I've been reading the site with interest for weeks since I got my used 55 plate ES with 14k miles on the clock a couple of weeks ago. I've read a lot of horror stories about early models being riddled with problems, but aside from a small rattle from behind me (not sure exactly where it's coming from, possibly the glass roof lining) I haven't noticed any particular problems. Is there anything I should be particularly looking out for? Despite being a 55 plate, it was first registered in January 06 so I still have a good 14 or so months warranty left to sort any niggles. I must confess I am hyper sensitive about the slightest possible glitch. I parked on a slightly sloping grass hill at a car boot sale last weekend and the car made a clunk from behind me as I pulled the brakes on, almost as if the car wanted to move backwards, and I wondered whether it might be the infamous rear shock problem. I also had an incident earlier today when she didn't start first time when I pushed the ignition button. Am I flapping over nothing...???!! |

There are people on here who will give you horror stories - and think all civics are the same - well they are not
The truth is that Honda's are generally well built and you shouldn't have any issues - as long as you have a good dealer and they have completed all the recalls on the car The only piece of advice I would giove you is leave the car in gear when parking on a slope then if the handbrake does fail the car still won't move 1st gear if facing up the slope or Reverse if facing down Your dealer should be able to take care of the rattle you have Look after your car and it should look after you Make sure you post some pics of it soon |

Your dealer should be able to run a computer check, on what has been done on your car under warranty, since new Sandgirl.
Shocks have been a known problem, but not on all cars. As for little rattles, I live with them. Never did believe that VW Golf advert on the T.V. As for starting first time every time, my cousins new Roller doesn't do that. When you have time, book an hour with your dealer, so he can see what has been done on your car. Meanwhile enjoy it. |

I blame the curse of this forum. It's so informative that you go looking for niggles. I never had any issues with my last car (a clio) but then again, I wasn't addicted to a Clio forum and therefore wasn't aware of common problems. Maybe there were niggles with the clio but I was oblivious to them!

Thanks guys!! I feel very reassured now!
My last car was a HR-V which I part-ex'd for the Civic and I didn't have a single problem with it until some silly cow of a woman driver went into the back of me a few months ago and rattles followed after the repairs, which sounded the death knell for my HR-V and pushed me into a change. I'm a complete Honda convert! Whenever I'd gone to Honda for my servicing, I looked lovingly at the Civics but didn't think I'd be able to stretch to afford one, then along came this one. Then so many negative posts scared me to bloody death...!!! Great forum though - very helpful and informative, and nice to know I'm not the only one that finds my little blue beast to be a hottie...!!! |

You might also bear in mind that any "new model" issues were probably ironed out by the previous owner! (and it will still be under warranty!)
Good luck with your new acquisition - you'll love it! |

I've had my 55 plate Civic now for 6 months and love it. I must admit thou I have had to get Honda to look at a couple of "known" issues. They are always very helpful and the work was done under warranty.

You seem to go to very great lengths to persuade people that the Civic is perfect in every respect. Do you have any involvement with Honda UK? To the OP, I'd imagine that any defects have already been rectified so I wouldn't worry too much about the odd squeak or rattle, as they're quite normal on this car. |

I presume your talking about my steering rack!! How on earth would someone scraping the rear side of my bumper 8 months at about 1mph cause my steering rack to become faulty? And for that matter how would someone else driving it (this person being from Honda dealership/bodyshop) have caused it to be faulty? Barely any miles were added to the car when it went in and the petrol consumption was minimal. |

Brodick !! It was the back bumper, he was trying to fit past me and therefore was moving as slowly as possible scraping me along the way. Actually I think it may just be the TC curse, when I called the dealership today and told them they put me on hold whilst telling the service manager and then came back an said he had run away and jumped through the glass window |

Yes, do try to pay attention Broders, everyone knows it was the back bumper.
Most probable. Quote:
LOL, I understand him... letīs hope the glass window was made by Honda so it broke easily. |

Blimey...!! What have I started!!!
Thanks for all the feedback guys... I must confess, I love the car. Have heard one or two creaks from the rear that have immediately made me fear for the shocks, but could just as easily have been something innocuous, but will keep an ear out as it's well within warranty. I have to say Millacr, thanks for your post in particular - I was beginning to think I was the only person on here without a brand spanking new Civ!! |
