Question No Cruise control

Hi Guys,

Any ideas on what can cause the cruise control not to work? I would like to assure you I have do not have my foot anywhere near the brake or clutch pedal when I try it. I have tryed the CC at different speed, always wait until the engine is warm but nothing. Strange thing is that it worked on one trip, and tryed switching it on and off and I would say it came on 2 out of three times straight away, and i thought great it is starting to work, but since then nothing. The main cruise light comes on but that is it, even if I press the set button all day long.

The dealer will be looking at it when I have the oil changed, however I would like to have some idea of what could be going on before hand to ensure a quick resolution.

Thanks in advance of your thoughts.

PS. 700 miles so far and 54mpg - Very happy - what will it be like when its fully run in?

Assuming you have the main cruise button pushed in (it's a push on push off button) with the single outline light on your dashboard then when you're travelling above 28mph you should just be able to press the bottom of the middle button (set/decel) momentarily and a green light will come on next to the outline light telling you cruise is on. It works for me as soon as the engine has been started so I wouldn't worry about warming it up/etc. Just see what the dealer says.

I'm on just under 20k and getting approx 47mpg with a reasonably light right foot (i lke to nudge it when it's on boost just for fun but other than that I'm mainly under 2krpm) but I mainly do short country road journeys which doesnt help. I'd say if you're getting 54mpg cling onto it!

When you switch the CC on does the Cruise main symbol appear on your dash.

If it does and your cc does not work - take it to the dealer
it is a warranty issue

As soon as I press the cruise button the main cruise light appears, without fail. As said it will have to be sorted by the dealer, I am just concerned that if it is not a common problem it may take some finding. I have even tried putting my foot under the brake and clutch pedal to pull them up, but obviously no change. I have even (dangerously) put my foot under the seat to ensure it is no where near the pedals.

Ref mpg, I have a 30 mile journey to work mainly 30's 40's and 60's and drive really light footed. I have become addicted to trying to drive as efficiently as possible. It is surprissing though how quickly it can come down the moment you breath to heavily. Also suprised how low the mpg is above 50mph, seems to be around 40 to 50, I thought it would be higher, however I am not complaining with 54mpg especially as I have I have 18" wheels which reduce mpg.

Dealer will sort it for you Diesel, without cost to you .
Will be something simple I suspect, like a dodgy set button.

18inch wheels should have no effect on the MPG as the overall diameter stays the same (only the Alloy is bigger, the tyre itself is 'thinner'). over/under inflated tyres on the other hand (and some tyres claim to lower rolling resistance, however this is generally negligible in the grand scheme of things).

Not according to Honda, models with 16" wheels as standard are quoted 1 or 2 more mpg than those fitted with 17" wheels, unless I am missing something, which is more than likely.

That's because the 17" wheels are wider, so have more wind resistance. The 18" are the same width as the 17", so should be the same.

Just a random thought - with the car running, get someone to check the back of the car.

Are the brake lights on?

If the brake light switch is faulty, or incorrectly set so that the brake lights are permanently on, then the CC system will think you are braking even when you are not (and therefore turn off the CC)

might be worth seeing if you just need to breath hard on the brake pedal to get the lights to come on too - vibes at driving speed could cause it to flap around slightly - again if the switch is mis-aligned that could be enough to make the brake lights come on

might not be it at all - but worth 5 mins to check

I muyst admit though the wideness never occured to me, but I asked my dealer when I bought the car and he assured me it would not affect MPH or MPG (to any great degree at least).

Good thought - no brake lights flickering - still atleast it rules out one possibility, so maybe it is the clutch sensor or just a poor connection on the set button. It will be booked in soon, so hopefully the problem can be found and the solution can be added to the bank of knowledge known as civicinfo.

Just to side track. I filled up with Shell V power last weeked, and I reckon I get 2mpg less than normal cheaper diesel, although I guess it only works on engines that need a bit of a clean, but still I had to try it. I have concluded this as my morning journey is free from traffic, so pretty consistant, and I was able to achieve 58mpg the week before last on 3 occasions, the best I achieved last week is 56mpg and I have really being trying. I might occassionally use it though just because it may keep the injectors clean.

Cruies control now works. It went in for an oil change, and they alegidly tested the car and said there was no fault and that it works. So the suggestion is I must have been doing something wrong. However, I am not doing anything different, and yet I must of tryed it a hundred times over the past few weeks. Secondly they claim they did not do anything, so why is the clock now 5 minutes slow? Strange thing to happen when you change the oil! Secondly the trip computer had been changed from trip A to B.

Okay, you may say if the problem is fixed then you should be happy, which I am ish, however, I believe in honesty and being transparent, as it builds trust, which I believe is the most important thing to have between customer and supplier.

I will just apologies to everyone who has had, or is having much bigger problems as this will appear very trival.

Oh well, spoke to soon. CC worked 2 out of 4 times this morning and this evening does not work at all. Also had an annoying rattle, which I though was coming from the roof, started thinking of all the reports on here, so I felt around a bit, nearly hit the verge, then found out it was the passanger seat belt knocking against the side of the car DOH!
