Im in South Africa, havent received or heard anything from Honda SA yet.
My Civic sustained around 1200 bucks worth of damage after the handbrake released itself on a slight incline. I've posted pics on a previous thread.
They stated nothing wrong with my handbrake or any other handbrake at the time...lets see what they have to say now. Hoping for compensation, will try hard for it but probably wont get anything out of them.

Time for a quick analysis of the survey.

Thank you to everyone who responded to the PM and filled in the survey (nearly 1100 people) - it provides us all with a full and proper picture.

About 13.5% of owners have experienced the "fly-off" problem. I put in the "Car moved when handbrake is on" option just to filter out that situation - when the driver simply hasn't pulled on the lever hard enough. Hopefully this whole episode will educate the 6% of people who have suffered from the fact that direct-action cable operated disk brake handbrakes have no mechanical leverage, and need to be applied hard to get any grip and overcome any disk shrinkage. The manual does not explain this - and it really ought to.

That 13.5% can be split into 9.5% who have received a letter, and 4% who haven't received a letter. So either 4% have made it up, or the fault is not limited to those who have a letter (and I presume a VIN with a faulty handbrake). We should all beware then, and hope that Honda will apply the fix to anyone who reports the fault, not just those on a VIN list.

A third of people don't leave their cars in gear. With luck, this number will reduce.

Most people don't angle their wheels on a hill. Fair enough, so long as you leave your car in gear. But 20% of people never leave it in gear and never angle their wheels.

For those that have had the lever spring off, the fault seems evenly spread amongst the model years, and most of the time the fault is caught by the driver. This is when it goes bang when you climb into the car, and the slightest movement can trigger it.

1.5% of people have suffered damage as a result of the fault. For half the claims made, Honda are paying out (though this is based now on very small numbers and may include cases that were presented before the nature of the fault was fully known).

My conclusions:

The manual is a bit poor. Drivers education and understanding of the limitations of the handbrake is also poor. With luck this episode will cause people to rely less on the handbrake as a foolproof system.

That said, there is a significant issue where the handbrake may fly off. The manufacturer has taken steps to inform people, make a fix, and is compensating those who have suffered.

Any dealer who feigns ignorance, or who says "it's never happened", should be pointed here!

UPDATE

Still not heard anything from Honda 5 phone calls later.
Spoken to Trading Standards and was told I have a good case and they gave me datails of next steps to do so I rang first thing yesterday and gave them until end of play today I would be sending a letter to the dealer stating the 1979 Sale of goods ACT giving them 5 working days to reply with the answer I WANT or further action will be taken.

My friend that came with me when I bought the car wants to go to the dealership with me when she comes to stay at Christmas. She wants to have a anchor to throw out the window and tie tyres around the car to protect well we are inside. Just to prove a point and make possible customers " ASK WHY??!!!" Could cause a stir!!!!

Thanks TruckerEm for the update. Sorry to hear of the lack of progress. Difficult the situation may be for you, please try and remain calm, if I may say so, and act reasonably at all times so that you do not do yourself an injustice. You appear to have the upper hand at the moment, would be a shame to throw it away. I take it your comments at (b) are tongue in cheek, no matter how tempting.

Perhaps the reason for your dealer's behaviour is that they (and maybe Honda UK) are just not used to coping with this scenario. I have a feeling that all will be resolved to your satisfaction sooner or later.

Good luck, keep to the script.

My update for the day on the subject is I have issued a letter to my dealer stating the "Sales of goods 1979 Act" also sent it to Honda Headoffice to keep them informed.

We will now see what they do next..................
