The whole handbrake fault thing is the lever pinging off, all by itself. The Honda letter is getting the user to try and make the ratchet more reliable, reducing the chances of this happening.

The fact that a third party saw the lever off is very lucky - it shows that the fault probably occurred. The fact that the car didn't roll away as soon as you left it shows that you didn't forget to apply the brake.

I would start by having a nice polite conversation with Honda CS, explaining what has happened.

This issue is just going to snow ball!!!

I now have it in writing that my car will be fixed and Honda UK will be covering the FULL COST. (After calling again requesting it to be emailed to me, which it was in less than 30 minutes!!) The lady I spoke to say she was sorry it had not been sent before but they are EXTREMELY BUSY over the handbrake fault, I just laughed and said, "You dont say!!"

I suggest to anyone who wants to get the damage to there cars paid for to FIGHT for it, keep ringing bugging them keep a list of dates, times and names of everyone you call over the matter be that the Dealer OR Honda UK. To be honest I have not had any luck at all with my dealer (even received a letter from them saying they would pay for no repairs or damaged caused to a 3rd party) Sadly they wasted there time on postage as the car was booked into be fixed by them in between them sending it and me getting it. Once my car is fixed & handbrake done, I WILL NOT BE USING THE DEALERSHIP AGAIN!! Which is a pain as there is no other Dealership in the county!! Just means when I need it serviced will go and stay with a friend up the country and get it done well I am away!

I will PM you Frank

And yes I am def a woman, Well was when I last looked.

I imagine there were a few red faces at your dealership, TruckerEm, after sending you that letter and then receiving confirmation from Honda that they were going to foot the bill.

Anyway well done and I'm glad it's all confirmed in writing now.

Yes they were all very sticky sweet when I had to ring to book a suitable time for them to have my car.

Would someone in this forum please be kind enough to send me scanned copy of the recall letter. I need to show it my local Honda dealership here in South Africa as well as send a copy to Honda South Africa for their take on matters.

Thanks!

Thanks.
I was not given any special advice on how to apply it. Ben Morgan rang me to tell me the newly designed handbrake had arrived and was sitting on his desk waiting to be couriered specially to me the next day, to be fitted at my convenience. After experiencing the three previous faulty handbrakes flying off I will always leave it in gear now anyway! I am still awaiting a further phone call to discuss the promised goodwill gesture. I feel another letter coming on!

Thank you. Still interested in your views/comments when the "new" handbrake is finally fitted. Good luck with the "goodwill gesture".

To clarify; the 'new ' handbrake was fitted 3 weeks ago and there's been no loud bangs or flying off of lever so far, it looks identical though.

Honest John's site says that the recall is due to an incorrectly fitted spring in the lever, in which case the replacement will presumably be identical but with the spring fitted correctly?

Interesting read. I see civinfo gets a mention too as the "civic specific chatroom"

I seem to recall Pottsy stripping a handbrake lever down following the disclosure on Honest John's site and his findings were inconclusive, I think.

Roobarb, Were you given any advice on how to apply your new handbrake? ie, use of button? Thank you.

I think Pottsy took it apart after speculations on the forum because all the rest of us were to lazy to take ours apart.
It is posted on here, but I wasn´t able to find it.

Mmmmm, I don't consider myself to have the necessary skills, or guts to strip down a handbrake lever. Leave it to the professionals I say. In the meantime everyone over there have a cracking christmas!

I had my handbrake fly off with a bang today.

I had just stopped at some red lights on a slight hill and put the handbrake on. Within about a second of taking my hand off the lever it went bang and completely released. I dont think I used the recommended technique in the letter for putting the handbrake on, it is easy to forget and use the technique you were taught and are used to doing after many years driving.

Whenever I am parked on a hill to leave the car I am making absolutely sure the handbrake is properly on , engine in gear etc etc.

IT REALLY DOES HAPPEN - BE WARNED

I can vouch for that too.

I accidently touched the button at traffic lights on a slope yesterday and it went clunk and dropped. Thankfully was nothing behind me hugging my ass and I slammed my foot on the foot brake.

I cant wait to get this problem sorted out as am starting to get worried when driving it and espically leaving it anywhere in case I come back and its not there or rolled into something. And with an 18 month old car its not really a problem Id had of expected to have.
