Any driving instructor here can tell where they got the idea of ratchet wearing?
Is that in the textbook for driving instructors?
I used to be a driving instructor many years ago and used to teach pupils to press the button when applying hand brake, mainly because it would have been marked as a fault by examiner if they did not

'Wearing ratchet' starts to look like a myth created by UK driving examiners...

Anyone who is a driving examiner?

On Watchdog the other day, wasn't there a comment from Drving Standard Agency(?) that not pressing the button is NOT a part of driving test?
A myth creating another myth...
Any examiner, or DSA officer, around?

I have owned 8 cars over a period of 25 years - I too have never pushed the button in on the handbrake and never had an issue neither have I felt the need to leave a car in gear for fear of the handbrake failing. That is until I bought the civic, handbrake dropped down three times each time straight after applying and whilst I was in the car I sent it back to the dealership to check in July 2006 after it happened the first time and was told nothing was wrong!!

I was waiting for about half hour for "Er Indoors", as I arrived too early for picking her up.
Parked on a steep hill nearby and as I was sat in the car anyway, decided to apply the handbrake as advised by Honda's recall letter and for the first time in donkey's years, left the car out of gear. ( just out of interest).
After about 10 minutes, there was a series of groans and the car moved downhill about 300mm. The handbrake lever was still fully up. Contraction, I reckon.

Your not missing much, thats for sure. Only thing is, if your car did roll away then you would have a claim against Honda UK as you haven't had the letter. But after JTL's comment, it doesn't seem to really matter how the handbrake is applied. If its going to fail, then its going to fail.

There appear to be two different failure modes.

1) As described by Honda. The Civic handbrake coming off too easily.

2) As described by JTL (and others). The car creeping. This is not unheard of on disc brake cars and is related to disc cooling etc.

My handbrake has failed with or without touching the button, my car now never gets left any where (not even on the flat) with out being in gear. And when at junctions, jams or traffic lights the handbrake maybe on but my foot is at the ready over the foot brake.

If you didn't press the button in on applying the handbrake, your news is alarming. Does that mean "the letter" is a load of codswallop?

The "don't press the button" issue is a pile of bullsh*t in my view. I am no engineer, but logically, either a handbrake works properly or it does not, and with pressing the button when pulling on, I can accept it going down one click, but down all the way? How would the button possibly affect this? I guess it is simply a bad design and needs replacement, but Honda needs time to re-design it and probably wants to avoid a full recall (a few lawsuits are still cheaper than a mass recall). All these years they knew how to do things properly, and now suddenly they don't, this is what they call "cost control" I guess

Thank you, Civicfan,
Like you, I am no engineer and I would agree with most of what you say. However, is it not the case that Honda UK are facing a recall to many Civics. I seem to remember that one member, I think Rhubarb, has already had a 'modified' new handbrake fitted after he, Rhubarb, mithered Honda UK to death over the issue, quite properly no doubt.

Same thing happened to me, but I think I used the button - see an earlier post. When I put my handbrake on now I make absolutely sure I dont touch the button.

At least in Germany, Switzerland and Sweden the letter says:

"we will contact you in March or April 2008 to invite you to make an appointment with your dealer or a Honda service and repair center to proceed with a free handbrake system modification for your Honda Civic"

Now I'm wondering why we are not being offered a replacement in the UK.

I had a letter (i think) saying we would get our handbrake modified or replaced in march and my dealer would contact us.

I also got a cheque from honda after our car had a handbrake malfunction and did some damage to our car and another one on a hill.

Good that Honda paid up. It shouldn't have happened in the first place, but its cases like yours which have made them realise that there is a problem.

When BMW wrote about the Mini in December 2002, they actually explained that a Mini had rolled down a hill and collided with 3 cars at the bottom! I must admit that when I had the 'new' handbrake fitted it didn't feel as good as the original, this one felt more slack but never had a problem with it but then I didn't have a problem with the first one. I have however experianced the handbrake 'jumping' down on the Civic.

Just astounded that its taking soooooooo long to get this sorted.
