What????? They sent you the instructions without the letter? I thought that you only got the instructions with the letter?

They do seem to be taking their time with the letters. I got mines 3 weeks after I picked the car up. Loved how the letter had the thing about if the car had changed ownership etc - in 3 weeks? I don't think so, plus Mr Clarko hadn't had it on the telly by then

No worries, the fact that you received something from Honda means that you are on the list for dealer recall.

I seem to remember that one member, I think Rhubarb, has already had a 'modified' new handbrake fitted after he, Rhubarb, mithered Honda UK to death over the issue, quite properly no doubt.

After I realised the dealership had no power or knowledge of what was going on behind the scenes, I wrote two letters to Honda Uk. Perhaps the fact my car was parked in the school car park at work when the handbrake released itself ( not for the first time) and smashed into the school building, speeded up their response. Luckily no child was hit!

I thought it was going to well in our village of Inbredinthemoor.
A couple have only recently moved here and on their second day, his 1.8 4 door Civic
goes for a wander straight down his drive, across the little lane, through the hedge and into the field opposite.
I have always left my cars in gear he says, but with the moving in etc, I forgot.

I am guessing he got a flyer under his wiper while it was siting in the field?

My handbrake self-released again this week. In gear..

Too Right, it was my bl--din field.
He now wants me to obtain Planning Permission for him, to re arrange his drive without a slope.
Will be cheaper for him to buy another car, what with my Professional Fees of £3.68p an hour.

P.S. So did mine FWH.

so far so good for me, but i leave it in gear 'just in case'. IN over 2 months of having my car it has slipped out of gear, yet. I am, however, thankful that my drive is level.

I was thinking I was one of the lucky ones but my handbrake jumped off this week. I had just reversed onto my drive, put it in first gear and applied the handbrake hard without pressing the button. I was about to get out when I heard a loud bang, I knew exactly what it was without looking. It had jumped down about half way. The car was on a slight slope but didn't move as the handbrake was still just holding it.

.......and the fact that you had left your car in gear. I find these examples cause for concern and questions the guidance given by Honda UK in their "letter" which many of us have received.

I agree completely. Before I received the Honda letter and instructions I always pressed the button and never had a problem, I started doing it their way "just in case". I have always been in the habit of leaving cars in gear.

huk are in the process of sending out letters for a recall for this problem as we speak. DO NOT HOLD THE BUTTON IN WHEN APPLYING THE HAND BREAK. when honda choose a company to make a part for them they tell them to do it....they then take the finished article and "make it better". Basically the ratchet mechanism when they recieved it was metal...honda then changed it to a plastic mechanism to save money and it obviously didnt work. there is a new mechanism being applied from march.

This last time I am quite sure I didn´t - but I could be wrong.

Interesting! Thank you. First info on what is actually being changed. Do you think it is a friction thing with the plastic, or is it flexing or something?

I don't understand why Honda UK don't specify a plastic ratchet in the first place. By modifying the "finished" product once received from it's manufacturer's, this, surely increases costs.
Since receiving "the letter" I, like most, if not all of us, have been applying the handbrake without depressing the button, (and leaving the car in gear). I must say the noise from the ratchet does, to me, infer plastic rather than metal. Interesting. Thank you.

I think he was saying it was redesigned before mfg started.
An injection moulded plastic ratchet will be cheaper than a metal one - even if you take into account the redesign cost.

OK. I won't argue with that.
