Back on topic : I'm not sure it's a good journalist job they've made and if they have counted all of the recorded problems with the handbrakes...

I think there are more than 0.12 %

The civinfo survey give a 5.3% figure... on the 1 283 owners who have filled the survey.

so if we apply that to the 80 000 cars produced it gives a 4 240 people with faulty handbrake (and i'm in)

As stated earlier in this thread, people like to complain rather than praise, so the figure is definitely lower than 5.3%.

d'oh!

9x10 = 90
9x2 = 18
90 + 18 = 98 obviously!

LOL - cheers for that I-noel

don't know that we can apply the 5.3%, as a lot of owners will have come on here trying to find solutions to problems (inc handbrake), but yes I agree that Honda are probably looking at potentially quite a lot which HAVE failed, plus many more which MIGHT fail at some point in the future.

Fingers crossed for you. Are your referring to your original post of 31st October last year? I am sure Hamhog will be interested.

Exclamation

Yes I had a quote from my Honda dealer to repair the car but it would have cost loads of cash upfront to get it repaired so I went the insurance co way but that has cost me in increased premiums and loss of no claims bonus plus my excess. So I am hoping for a deal from Honda I am sure they like me really seeing as I seemed to have stirred up a hornets nest,
I am waiting for the return call will keep you posted

Good news spoke to Honda Customer Relations they are paying for the repairs I am sending off the invoice this afternoon.
Well done at last Honda!!!
Now maybe certain parties (no names mentioned ) will make a public apology to all of us that had handbrake problems and were made to feel that they were not capable of putting a handbrake on after many years of driving. All we want now is for the new handbrake or parts to be fitted so I and the rest of civic owners can relax when parking on a incline.

Did you take the car in to R...s Honda or did you take it to be sorted up country as you said a while back?
Sorry TruckerEm for the time lag I've been out of it for a while!

I am very pleased for you although I cannot understand why Hamhog is having the run around. I hope Hamhog takes note of your success. Well done!

The recall has made it to today's Irish Times as follows (I've snipped the article):
Quote:
Honda is to write to about 3,000 Civic drivers in Ireland to notify them of a problem with the car's handbrake. It is offering a handbrake upgrade to all owners of 2006 and 2007 Civic three- and five-door models....Honda said it is investigating one complaint from an Irish resident.
Wot? One complaint??

My civic is a 2007 model. I had never any handbrake self release problem (hope i will never have...) and would know nothing about it if i haven't read about it in civinfo. The local dealer sent my though the famous bulletin about it with the colour pictures etc.
My thoughts about it follows...
Let's just say that the problem is known since last October and the factory begun investigating it a month later. So, 5 months later they don't have a solution? We have a new model evey 5 years with a facelift during it for every car manufacturer and now they can't fix something like that? Isn't that strange?
We are talking about Honda, a car technology leader not lada or zastava!
I am afraid that the solution will come with the facelift model next year.

They said they are INVESTIGATING one complaint.
Not that they have received one complaint.

Number of complaints being ignored = Number of complaints received - 1.

I think I am right in saying that Honda UK was aware of the handbrake problem prior to October last year, although the company may be loathe to admit it. It has come clean now and assured all those affected that a new handbrake will be fitted March/April. I know of at least one Civinfo member who has had his handbrake replaced already. Having manufactured a vehicle with a defective handbrake, and publicly admitting so, I cannot see Honda UK going back on its promise to rectify the problem as per the "letter". I understand the '08 models are not affected. If there is a delay in the handbrake replacement recall, then Honda UK will only dig itself deeper into the hole it has created.

My Civic is June 2006 and most definitely has the problem, but Honda are reported to say that only Nov 2006 to Nov 2007 cars are affected. What's going on ?

^^^ Probably a misprint meaning November 2005 which is around the time it was launched?

Mine went for its first service yesterday but they could not do the handbrake as they do not yet have the parts available.

Let's indeed say that in October they recognised that they had a problem.

First issue - replicate it. My car is apparently effected - it was certainly built during the period they are recalling.
And yet, my handbrake has never (yet) failed. Despite me using the unrecommended method of holding the button in.

But at least Honda had lots of cars to play with...

But then again - even those owners who HAVE had the handbrake release itself say that it doesn't happen every time they put the handbrake on...

So how many people do you throw at it?
How soon do you actually believe that there really is a problem?
5 owners report it.
You send a team of 10 people to go and play with handbrakes on 500 cars.
None fail.
Are the 5 complaintents trying to pull a fast one?

5 more complaints filter through.
You send 50 people to go and play with 2500 cars.
3 weeks later, 2 say that they managed to get a handbrake to fail, IF they held the button in.
You send them all back to try it the same way
2 weeks later, results are in - 10 testers found a problem.

Aha! result!

now find a fix...
Write all owners telling them not to press the button. Hang on. Can't do that yet, don't know when fix will be available...

Now find a supplier for the upgraded version

Now order 100,000 of them

NOW write to all owners.

Now wait for the first batch to arrive...

Dilema time. Do you fit the new upgraded bits to the cars currently on the production line, or send them out with a known dodgy part?

etcetera etcetera

Having now written to 60-80K owners (depending on which paper you read), I can't see Honda backing out of the fix until the facelift...
