Just got our letter now.

I don't understand it though, its just shows you how to apply the handbrake like a bird without using the button, so everyone will hear the dreadful ratchet noise when you park.

I was always taught to press the button, pull the lever, then release so will continue doing that.

Its to cover their backs, do it their way and there is less chance of the system failure after all where there's blame..............

I take it the letter has an enclosed brick to tide you over til then?

If it's a serious problem (which it could well be) surely the existing cars should take priority over the ones sitting in the compound or coming off the production line at Swindon?

Yes, I thought this myself. It's a while to wait.

Yep same here by Recorded Delivery too !!

Just for those that didnt this is the advice that was sent minus the waffle about how they care for their customers;

"Following evaluation, we have identified a potential concern regarding the operation of the handbrake fitted to your Honda Civic. If the handbrake is applied with the release button intentionally or unintentionally pressed there is a small risk that the handbrake may not latch sufficiently to hold the vehicle securely on a slope.

Please refer to your owner's manual and the instructions enclosed with this letter. When applying the handbrake pull the lever up fully without touching the release button. If these operating instructions are followed the handbrak'es effecicieny will be unaffected. It is important that other drivers of your Civic are also made aware of these instructions".

A new handbrake to be issued in 2008.

I 'm curious if foreign customers will receive such letter too.
Anyway, it's another "what about..." question on the list for my dealer.

Comforting words I'm sure but they will mean nothing when I'm chasing my civic down a hill, like in a scene from "Last of the Summer Wine"

Has anyone who applies the handbrake in the proper manner
had any issues ?

It is apparent that only some cars have so far had issues
as of yet we have not and always leave the car in gear anyway - just incase as long as everyone does this - I don't mind waiting until Honda
are ready to release any fix that they think is required

I did say in a post some time ago that Honda would probably be looking into the issue and just not confirming anything until they knew how they were going to handle it

No Letter arrived here as yet - will keep an eye out though

Exactly - I did say in another handbrake post I would cut the Honda waffle about how they care for their customers

Perhaps the fix for this is that by March/April all the teeth will have worn off the lower part of your ratchet mechanism and you'll have to pull it up harder to the next one up. Job done!!!!

only if you do not leave your car in gear DR - regardless of what you are driving if you park on a hill no matter how steep you should also leave your car in 1st gear or reverse (or park for automatic cars) depending on how your car is parked

I thought this was common knowledge

Yes, I know Broders, I have been driving a while now, but thanks for your "sensible" approach to the matter.

I haven't had this problem as yet, or even noticed an issue with the handbrake, but I do always leave it in gear, and with the wheels turned on a hill - we live on a hill and I often park it off the drive when I'm messing with the 205 so its habit for me I guess.

Better check the Mrs does as well though, dont want the car rolling with my little lad in.

So at last Honda are admitting that there is a problem with the hand brake, Now I am going to ask them to repay the cost of the repairs to my car and inform my insurance co. of this fault on the hand brake, I should see my no claims bonus reinstated and the cost of my insurance lowered!!!
