I bought my ex Honda owned car in Sept 07 and I will def say it may have been pre owned by them but its still got the orginal handbrake!! Which Honda know to there cost!! I would if I were you I'd take today as a warning with the handbrake!! Keep on to Honda if you dont here from them by the end of the month. I as yet have not received the 2nd recall letter advising about the new handbrake. But have been told by my dealer I will have it done when it goes into have some other bits done under warranty. |

Having just had our honda civic for three weeks we were devastated when we found it at the bottom of the drive crashed into a wall, stoving in the wing and the drivers door as well as ripping off the wing mirror. Only to discover that they have a fault with the handbrake that we were never advised of. After calling Honda, we were told that we should have signed a disclaimer stating that the car would always be left IN GEAR! To those people who say you should leave your car in gear we were both taught to drive by different driving schools and always told you never under any circumstances leave your car in gear. Should Honda be selling cars with a known safety fault?

Hi Really sorry to hear about your car. I know exactly how you feel. I have to say I would agree about the handbrake in past cars I have never left them in gear and always press the button to apply the handbrake. But with the Civic its something that I have had to live with since my handbrake failed. Where did you buy your car was it from the only Honda dealer in the county? What year Registration is your car. |

Now that is a scary thing that your car is an 08 reg. As the handbrakes on the 08 cars are suppose to be ok. Where did you find out about the site? Have you seen my car parked at the dealership??!!! |

It would also be helpful to know whether the handbrake was still in the 'on' position when you returned to it or whether it was in the 'off' position. If you care to back track on this thread you will learn the reason for this question. Sorry to burden you will these queries at a difficult time for you but there are many other Civic owners affected by this issue. I might add that if your Civic was made in '08, or an 08 model, and the handbrake was found to be in the 'off' position upon your return, and you are positive you applied it, the situation sounds very ominous. Hi Guys
Can't give you the vin at the moment as the car is back at the dealers we were told that it was an 08 model but after recent events I'm not taking their word for it. The handbrake was still in the on position when I returned to the car, I had to climb over it to get into the drivers seat as drivers door was wrapped around a wall. Had a meeting today with the dealership general manager who says that they will fix all damage and Honda will pay, so fair result |

We found the site when we googled civic owners forum after we heard about disclaimers from dealers regarding handbrakes. |

The thing is that the Honda fix as I understand it is to stop the handbrake lever dropping off because of a potentially faulty ratchet mechanism ?
In your case the handbrake was still applied so this is the old saga of discs cooling and contracting resulting in not enough force to hold the car. The longer the journey, the hotter the discs, the worse the problem. The only really surefire fix is to introduce a dual system of disc brakes for the footbrake circuit and a drum brake for the handbrake circuit. As far as I'm aware my IS200 had a dual system so it is possible. |

Sorted
Hi Guys.
The car is definately an 08 with the modified handbrake fitted so it has to be the expansion problem. Following a rolling road test Honda UK are wiping there hands of it and offering to do nothing about it. Our local dealership are picking up the bill as a gesture of goodwill because they did not give us the correct operating instructions for the handbrake at the hand over. So still a good result for us. I find it hard to understand that the failsafe for the handbrake (designed to stop the car moving) is the gearbox (designed to make the car move). All of these issues aside we really love our 2.2 es it really is a great car. |

stayrich Thank you for the updates. I agree with Kremmen. However, to be fair, credit to your dealer. I hope the car is repaired to your complete satisfaction. I note your comments re the gearbox. I think both my wife and I will continue to leave the car in gear even when the handbrake is replaced under the recall programme.

hand brake recall
hi people,
i bought my '06 civic in mid Feb & just had a few things repaired / replaced under warranty. apparently the handbrake recall has only recently come into effect so my hand brake was replaced as a default. (arnold clark) not sure which models / dates it refers to but a call to your dealer should set things straight. gavin |

Hmmm I just phoned my local dealer and said I had heard about the handbrake recall and should I book my car in - and he said had I had the letter.. I said no, and he said in that case the car does not need it.
I thought it was all Civics from 06 onwards, but he says its only 2 chassis numbers (or similar). So I guess I've nothing to worry about? (I'd rather he would have checked, but insisted that no letter = no work needed) |

Well done Stayrich I am most impressed, I had a very different response to the damage to my car from our dealer they would'nt touch my car thankfully Honda UK did.
My car is booked in on the 30th April to have some warranty work done and a new handbrake!!! But have to admit still don't think I will be trusting it fully. Once bitten twice shy as they say! |
