This thread is about: handbrake self release (inc recall letter), it's in Bugs, faults and irritations at the Honda Civic forum Civinfo; The "...something to the windscreen..." was probably this: http://www.civinfo.com/forum/bugs-fa...top-strip.html ...and I agree with D-t, the new darker handbrake looks (and feels) better....

I just got my handbrake recall letter this morning.

They urge me to get it done ASAP because they are being monitored apparently.

They'll have to wait because I need to remove the centre console myself due to my custom wiring and I just don't have the time until late July.

Being as I don't park on any inclines, no big deal for me.

Just received mine too. Booked in - the garage reckons it will take about an hour.

Just tell the garage of your custom wiring and they'll work around it; no need to remove it yourself or make any alterations.

Hi

I think I'd rather remove the centre console myself as I know how it's wired.

I've got my Tm Q-Busta in there and I don't want to confuse things.

I'm in no rush to have it done so I will likely book it in late July when I have a week off. I can then take the console out, do a while-you-wait jobby and drive home and refit it.

I got mine changed yesterday... they did change the rear shock absorber in the same time. The Tech told me that they have a wrong batch on mine so they change it

Was in to take a look at my new 1.8 sport today (it just arrived at the dealers) and mentioned to the salesman about the handbrake and he said they were aware of that but was not clear whether my car will have the probelm or the fix. I also mentioned about the rear springs and he said that they had never heard such rubbish! God Finns! I will be checking myself when it is ready!

Angry more handbrake news!!

Just had my new handbrake fitted under recall on Tuesday, only took half an hour and all seems ok.
BUT just had an e-mail from a workmate, knows 2 people with civics, no previous problems, who have had recall work done and the new handbrakes have FAILED. One rolled off a drive, and other one thought car had been stolen as it had rolled so far away in a car park.
Seems like you still need to take care.

In both cars, if the handbrake was still in the 'up' position, then brake cooling was at fault rather than the handbrake.

As the new handbrake is stiffer, perhaps (not accusing, but perhaps) the handbrake had not been pulled on as tightly so exemplifying the brake cooling affect.

Mmmmm, I think before judgement can be passed we need to know precisely how and if the hand brake was fully applied and in what position the parking brake lever was in when the cars were recovered. alanwalne may well be right. In any event it appears that both cars were not left in gear. Bad news, I hope it is all sorted......

I have not been on here for a while, but thought I would add our expereinces. We purchased two civics and a CRV new in June 07 as company cars. I have an EX manual, my parents have EX auto and the CRV. Both are parked on a sloped douible driveway.

Yes, you guess it..... the EX ended up in the middle of the road at the end of my parents driveway, but not before it had the CRV and rolled down the side of it.

Luckily no other cars were around, nor people.

Honda took that both in and repaired them, although the repairs on the EX bad and some had to be done again.

Sorry to hear of your misfortune but the story apparently has a happy ending. Well done your local dealer. No doubt you have sussed out what went wrong.

I'd nearly forgotten about this. I take it that letters are still being sent out then? I'm still waiting. Guess they have a lots of cars to get around, hence the wait.

Had my CIvic a year now, experienced it rolling away last September due to handbrake releasing. I had the new revised handbrake fitted in November; mine was one of first in country to be replaced organised personally by Ben Morgan at Customer Relations. Felt partly reassured all was fine, although once you've experienced your car rolling away and smashing into a wall you don't ever forget to leave it in gear, incline or not.
So I was shocked to be told on it's first service that there had been a further upgrade of the handbrake so it was replaced again!! My Civic has had a total of 5 different handbrakes in it's short life. I'll never feel reassured that it is reliable.

Followers of this thread may remember that I stated on 2nd May I would write to Honda UK to seek written advice on how to apply the replacement handbrake. At the third attempt, I have, today, received that advice. It is from Steve Dyer, Manager, Customer Operations. It reads,

"Honda would recommend that you continue to follow the advice detailed within the owner's handbook and further detailed within the correspondence to you regarding handbrake operation".

Steve ignores the point in my last letter to him that the replacement handbrake was meant to reduce inconvenience. Not to touch the release button on applying the handbrake was defined as the inconvenience.

So there we have it folks, probably as most of us expected.

I think the wording of the letter sent out to all affected by Recorded Delivery last November/December could have been better.

I will now put my tin hat on!

Well well. Surprise, surprise. I wonder if any of the first generation replacement handbrakes self released?
