One of two things here. Was the handbrake still 'up' when you got to the car or had it dis-engaged??

Basically, if it was still 'up' then it is an issue with the discs cooling and releasing or slipping, if the handbrake has disengaged then it would be the ratchet.

What, on a brand new 08 Civic? I thought this was all sorted or are you aware of the ratchet failing on brand new Civics?

I was pointing out the two known 'faults' with the handbrake system.

1) a car that hasnt had the 'new, revised' handbrake ratchet fitted, may potentially release. When this occurs, the handle is found in the release position, i.e. down.

2) if the car is found with the handbrake still in the 'up' position then it is quite feasible that the handbrake was applied whilst the pads and discs were warm/hot. There are several manufacturers that have had occurances of this where the discs and pads have subsequently cooled, causing them to contract and the grip to be lost, hence the car slipping.

There have been several cases where someone on here has bought a new civic, assumed it to be an 08 my and therefore with the revised handbrake, to then have it fail, only to find out that their car was an 07 MY.

My initial question to which you refer was at a point where i was unaware of which model year car the thread starter had.

If this is the case then its still a design fault and totally unacceptable!
Maybe inprove the design and the qaulity of the materials used in the braking system?

Thank you for your response. What I was seeking, was whether as a dealer, you have experienced any problems with brand new 08 model Civics. By 'problem', I specifically mean the so called revised handbrake self releasing. I think most forum members are aware of the potential 'cooling disc' syndrome.

To be straight, in 7 months i'd not witnessed/experienced the problem happening with any customers cars, whatever model year it was, pre or post refit. In answer to your question, certainly no issues so far with the revised unit.

As you say, the disc cooling issue is a seperate one altogether.

In answer to Cnicolini's comment, yes, as discussed at great depth on here, the single brake set up could be looked upon as a design issue but as I say (firmly on the fence) Honda Civics are not the only car that have experienced this (citroen/bmw also).

If i were to plant my tongue firmly in cheek, following the owners manual and parking with wheels turned/in gear would however negate 99% of these occurances.

Dan you are being over cautious there - parking in gear would negate 100% of occurances

My Golf suffered from cooling disc syndrome; thankfully my neighbour was on hand to run down the road and stop it before it did any damage! My friend had an M3 whose discs warped when he applied the handbrake to an especially hot disc and then it cooled....

Oh, sorry, thought you were joking

Facing downhill - reverse
Facing upfill - any forward gear will do just fine.

When I was at my Dealers today, the service manager told me that they hadn't had any issues with the original one.
Bet he was having a pork pie for his lunch.
