In actual fact your totally ridiculous comments has completely p****d me off !!

Are you seriously suggesting that lots of people with many years driving experience have no idea how to apply a handbrake?

Oh please - you and Brodick should get together you would get on so well.

Thats a point CZ.
I have not had a problem yet and have always used the button, but have left my cars in gear for years. (was how I was taught )
So, for those of us who have not had an issue with it by Spring 08, why should we have the fuss of the dealers removing the centre console and whatever, resulting in the bangs, scratches, chips, forgotten re connections of wiring etc. ??

The problem is now, when my wife sees me pull the handbrake on, and hears all those clicks of the ratchet she will think I'm a hypocrite for telling her not to do it that way.

I suppose most of us will have received this letter today, mine turned up with my customer satisfaction survey form. Good timing there then Honda!!
Got my letter today. Mine released some time ago, but fortunately had car in gear so avoided car freewheeling onto busy road. Pleased that this has now been acknowledged as a fault and look forward to fix in Spring

You know this is getting a little heated!!
I have no idea how I apply the hand brake ! I'll try and remember to remember next time.
I was taught (almost 40 years ago!) to always leave my car in gear, this always catches my lad out who is a driving instructor. I'll see him Sunday and ask how he advises his clients.

In the mean time calm down calm down!

Being a fairly new driver, I'm slightly curious to point out that not pressing the release button while using the handbrake during my driving test would actually have earnt me a nice big FAIL. I'm pretty sure the DVLA's reason behind this is (as someone pointed out) it supposedly wears the ratchet out and makes your handbrake less reliable.

Interesting fix, Honda!

Please refer to your owner's manual and the instructions enclosed with this letter. When applying the handbrake pull the lever up fully without touching the release button.
So you need to let the handbrake rattle when you engage it? Quite opposite of what I always learned.

Need to keep this in mind when the 1st service is done though, so it can be changed.

No sound over here yet.. It should take some time, I expect. Let me go and tell them that they will make recall!

I was sure this was in the Highway code
Although some people on here feel I defend Honda too much
there is still some responsibility of the owner to do the following
especially if parking on a hill
( then if your handbrake does fail the car should be held in place by the gears)

252

Parking on hills. If you park on a hill you should
  • park close to the kerb and apply the handbrake firmly
  • select a forward gear and turn your steering wheel away from the kerb when facing uphill
  • select reverse gear and turn your steering wheel towards the kerb when facing downhill
  • use ‘park’ if your car has an automatic gearbox

We'll be getting this in the post tomorrow Honda have informed me, it's for those who can't wait for 2008, and those who live on very steep hills:

Can I just clarify something?

when we talk about handbrake releasing, is it a case that when you come back to the car the handbrake is back in the off position or is it just that the handbrake remains in the same place but has obviously slipped?

A friend has had this happen to her and I am just curious....

I might have to go back to the dealer though and give him a slap as my G/F had a huge debate with him about handbrake issues and he said that it was only women and people who are used to driving automatics that have this problem.

Imagine saying that to a 21st century woman. If she had her way it would have cost him a sale lol.

My 5 Series used to do it all the time, in the end I didn't bother using the hand brake as it made no difference whether it was on or off, but I like a few people have a routine for entering and leaving a car:

IN:

belt on, check handbrake and gear stick is in neutral, depress clutch, ignition (a bit simple but you get the idea)

OUT:

Ignition off, handbrake on, into gear (1 or R depending), belt off. (again simplified but you get the idea).

If someone told me it was my fault it had rolled I'd slug em', as I have said elsewhere, we are all old enough to be entrusted with this lump of metal that does over 100mph, do they think we can't work a hand brake???????

Do you think the advice in the booklet includes handbrake turns as well?

I have also received the letter... I hate pulling the handbrake up without the release button.

I guess I have too follow the Honda handbrake operation for now , until the fix next year...
