Please note that 3 and a half threads have been merged into this one, so there may be some double posts and some posts may seem to be out of context / order!

Sorry - best I could do!

Well, I have not received a letter from Honda UK re the handbrake issue. Does this mean Honda UK has sussed out the intelligentsia? Sorry, couldn't resist! Seriously I think Honda has now accepted that there is a problem and will try and make the modification foolproof. Ooops there I go again! Robbo51, I was impressed by your IT skills reproducing this mysterious letter. Thanks.

TBH with you I think Honda are going to have a bit of a hard time! We were ALL taught to pull the handbreak with the button down and sending a letter to people telling them to do it the opposite way to every other car in the world is not a get out of jail free card. Just had a look on the interweb and found some driving instructors all saying the same thing

Quote:
To apply the handbrake release the catch by pressing the button at the end of the handbrake. Pull it hard on, (up) then release the button. The catch will now lock the brake in the on position.
I have not had the problem and I think us i-shifters are less likely to suffer anyway, if we are too lazy to change gear when driving what makes you think we will pop into neutral when parking

P.S. Just Wiki'd too

My letter got here yesterday. I don't like it when letters arrive by recorded delivery, they make my heart jump until I get the darn thing open and see what's so important that somebody has to prove it was delivered.

I can't recall any problem with my handbrake, which is unusual as I've experienced most of the low level faults that have attached themselves to the model. I must admit to my first thought being: "...but this car's been on the market nearly two years! Have they only just discovered this?"

I wasn't entirely surprised though, the first thing I tell people when they ask about my Civic is that I think the build quality leaves much to be desired (and that's before I get started on their customer service".

I have just picked up my letter. Not happy as like others I have had to queue for 20 minutes wondering what the heck it was!!!!!

I am very concerned with the fact that Honda have advised everyone to suddenly start putting on the hand brake in a way everyone was told NOT to when learning to drive.

I was told that if you put on the hand brake without pressing the button then the notches get worn away, making the handbrake more susceptible to slipping!!!!! I have ALWAYS pressed the button in to apply the handbrake on every make and model of car I have driven.

For Honda to suddenly re write the rule book is disgusting. I will never remember to not press the button in, as cannot stop years of doing it!

I know there are many people who do apply the handbrake without pressing the button, but I am sure there are many like me who use the correct method.

Another thing that I am miffed about it how long it has taken for Honda to acknowledge this, as I have seen many posts on here months ago about people having their car roll down the hill due to a handbrake failing.

I only hope them people are able to claim compensation from Honda now for the damage done, and not have their Insurance Premiums affected.

I am interested to see if the "new" handbrake in March / April 08 allows the driver to be able to press the button when applying the handbrake.

Received my recall letter this morning, recorded delivery to be signed for (however the postman just shoved it through the letterbox without getting a signature ).

I have always applied the handbrake without pressing the button, but after reading handbrake failure threads on here I have recently started pressing the button to avoid any wear on the ratchet. Now, after reading this letter, i'm confused. I always give the handbrake a little wiggle to make sure it is on properly and leave it in gear, and so far have had no issues.

When Honda fit this new improved handbrake they could potentially damage something else in the process. In my case, as I have not had any problems, the old saying "if it ain't broke don't fix it" comes to mind.

I just wonder what prompted Honda UK to issue this letter and per recorded delivery. Has there been an horrific incident we don't yet know about? I feel it is out of character for Honda to react in this way bearing in mind their past track record on other faults with this model. They certainly appear to be covering their backs on this one.

I was greeted yesterday by our smart arse postman grinning and telling me it was a safety recall. And to make matters worse he followed that up with the old "did you see topgear?" line.

Despite me NOT owning a Type R Civic, I have had several people making the same smart arsed comments about the "Topgear" episode.

I think Clarkson is great, however he has hated the new styled Civic from day one when he wrote a review in his newspaper column. Clarkson is and CAN be wrong!

Sorry to go off topic there but suddenly Topgear is the bible of what makes a good car!

I've now got into the habit of pressing down on the handbrake, just to satisfy myself that's it's not going to slip off a ratchet. I also would never pull on the lever producing that horrible grating noise, very unprofessional.

In fact I would think that you could fail the advanced driving test by doing so?

Mind you, in the garage and at work I never use the handbrake anyway, both on the flat and I leave it in gear.

If you have signed for it they will refer to that when you try to persue legal action for problems dating after the signature.

It's all about quality management and all that legal stuff - as soon as an issue is directly security related, they have such procedures I guess

May I just say, if my memory serves me correctly, Jeremy has never had a good word for Honda motor cars in the UK.
