Well I for one will be in contact with my local Honda Dealer asking for payment for the repair to my car £1500+ which my insurance co, paid. I have seen my insurance premium go up by 50% due to this handbrake incident and also repayment of my excess, then I have got the next battle to get my no claims bonus reinstated.

I wish you the best of luck Mike in your quest for compensation.

I think you clearly have a good case, as Honda would not go to the trouble of letters to all Civic owners AND replace all handbrakes next year if there wasn't a design flaw.

I stand by my comments. I'm not saying people have not had faults but that doesn't mean there is a design fault as the majority have had no problem whatsoever.

Could it be a small scale random manufacturing component fault

I can remember that I had a recall notice for my second Prelude 2.2 VTi when it was about 6 months old in 99.
The ignition switch was replaced by an upgrade, as 3 cars had had their engines turn off, whilst on the move.
That must in total, have cost Honda a few bob.

They are going to a lot of expense for something though. Not to mention the bad publicity. I'm going to keep an open mind about it as we don't know what the actual fault is yet.

If it was a random manufacturing component fault, they would be able to identify which cars that batch was fitted to and recall them and simply fit correctly manufactured components.

I would talk to your insurer and fax them a copy of the letter then they will go after Honda if they think they can get someone to pin the costs on

I don't blame you one little bit Mike, I would if I were you. I think there may be a few more who will be pursuing this further as well after receiving the letter. I refer to those owners who are not members of this forum who may have been convinced by their dealers it was their own fault.

Hi All

I have received Honda's letter re the handbrake problem. I personally think that someone has been seriously injured as a result of yet another dodgy honda component. My handbrake has been performing faultlessly so far. The only compaint I have is that you have to pull it up quite high, which seems odd. Like alot of other people on this site I was taught to depress the button, and quite frankly alot people will not change a habit of a lifetime, myself included. I really do not relish the thought of a dealership taking my car apart again to put the new handbrake in place. The last time it went to Ruislip Honda for the Strut replacement they damaged the trim inside the engine bay and lost one of the screws holding the trim in place. This recall will only put the dealerships under more pressure with the result that more cars wil end up damaged.

I haven't received any letter yet. It can go with my child benefit data apology letter. I haven't had any problems so far, but then I seem to use a mix of the correct method & the incorrect method: I push the button in, pull the lever up and then pull it up another click or two with the button out. I don't know why - it may be something to do with the time I was stuck in a traffic jam on a big hill in St Albans, put my handbrake full on and still started rolling back. A nightmare for someone who had only just passed their test! (the car was my Chrysler Sunbeam).

I remember reading somewhere that handbreaks in general should be on tight in 10 clicks if it's more that that you should get it looked at

Exactly !!

If there is no problem then why not send out a letter telling people the best and most reliable of applying their handbrake?
