handbrake self release (inc recall letter)

Hi Has any member had this problem, after parking on a fairly steep slope I put on the handbrake and got out, I opened the back door and leaned inside as I put my weight on the rear seat I heard a loud click and the handbrake released itself, the car rolled forwards and crashed into the barrier causing quite a lot of damage, although the car only rolled about three feet!

I have asked my honda dealer and they know of no known issue?
If it is a known issue i assume they will repair the damage to my boot under warranty then?

They must know, even I knew (which was why I was so worried when I saw my Mum had parked my new CTR on a steep hill on Monday!) If your dealer still say the don't then I suggest that you call Honda Customer Relations (where the dealers get their info from) Their number is 01753 590760.

My Dealer told me that when they get someone coming in with a 'issue' with a Civic, the Serivce guys actually come onto this site to see how many others have this problem too!

I can believe it, although when I bought my car from the same dealer, the service manager told me (when I explained I was well informed about the car because of this site) they had never heard of civinfo! Dealers telling lies? Never!

Yes HUK know about this but do they care? No is the answer unfortunately!

I think it will take a serious injury/death before they start to look in to it but hey all those in favour of HUK and those that believe that the civic is no different to any other new car on the road when it comes to faults will tell you "leave the car in gear as it says in the manual"

Grrrrr it makes me mad

leaving it in gear is all well and good but the brake should not physically release itself as is the case here. handbrake fade is a common problem with rear disc brake cars which is why the manual tells you to leave it in gear.

Is there not something in the highwaycode about leaving your car in gear if parked on a hill you certainly have to do it in San Francisco - its law

I am astonished at the amount of people that don't leave their car in gear ona hill

It seems this is not only a Honda issue ( thinking of vauxhall vectra)
the other issue is that it only affects some cars - so what the H*** is causing it ( I think Honda will be aware of something untoward and looking into it on the QT and because they don't know what is causing it
are currently saying nothing

I have said it before and I will say it again WHY DOES IT ONLY AFFECT SOME CARS WHEN THE REST CURRENTLY HSVE NO ISSUES 7 + months and no probs with our car

you are not meant to get out of your car when the engine is running anyway - unless it is an emergancy ( I have not got a copy myself
but I have been informed this is the the highway code)

so no issue there then

The salesman who will remain nameless actually uses this site and calls it the 'Geek' site!

So when i'm back in for my months check up on the car we are going to discuss the 'Geek' site over coffee

As far as I know there is no fix for this problem.

But it is a known problem.
I have had it.

There should be something that they can do......anyone on here that owned a BM mini (the first ever ones) can tell you that they had the same problem that was discovered about a year after the cars had been out. It arose because someone parked on a hill and the handbrake jumped off and the car caused loads of damage to other cars and BM held up their hands and said there was an issue.

They sent a letter to every owner advising of the issue, asking you to return your car to have a new handbrake fitted and also advising to leave your car in gear while parking on a slope of any kind. Must admit the handbrake felt pants after they changed it
