Buying Used - Good Idea?

Although I started out looking at new Civics, I'm also potentially open to getting a second hand one. Is this a good idea (apart from the lower cost)? Are there specific things to look for on a used Civic?

I wouldnt if I were you not unless its only a few months old or ex demo the earlier models appear to have more problems.

I bought mine 2nd hand from a dealer ex demo with 7000 on the clock, and have had absolutely no problems with, in fact its never been near the garage since although it is going n next week for some minor warranty work. I can honestly say I have never had such a good car.

I got a top of the range EX with a load of extras for about the same as I could have got a bottom of the range SE with nothing. 13 months old and 16000 miles. Absolutely love it.

Got my 2.2 diesel second hand, from a private user. (A former forum member btw.) It had 35.000 km and was about 18 months old.
I almost always buy young second hand cars and never had any problems. My dealer treats me just like any other customer, he knows my point of view when it somes to cars.
Buying a scond hand one just takes a little bit more of effort I think. You need to get as much information as possible, you have to know what to check, you can't choose your colour and options, and in the end you're never 100% certain about the cars history. (Unless you buy from someone you really know well, like a relative or neighbour or so.)
But I'm willing to take that risk. My Civic didn't even cost me 2/3 of the retail price, and apart from 1 scratch it looked brand new. And I still got the warranty, too.
Just my opnion...

I only ever buy brand new now but the depreciation hurts.

I might get a second hand car. I'd avoid the 'earlier' cars though, as they have seemed to have had more problems. I wouldn't personally get a TypeR used though.

It's always a good idea not to buy the earlier cars, even new. Most problems will be sorted out in later versions.
(And my 2.2 has serial number 955.... But I couldn't resist. )

I'd seriously think twice about buying a demonstrator Type R, as everyone I've spoken too who's test driven one said they got in it and then next thing was...blast off!!! Can't be doing the engine much good from cold.

Look if you are getting a valid warranty, demand information from an authorized dealer on whether the warranty wasn't voided. After all, the seller has a reason to want to sell the (relatively new) car losing a lot of money. Another catch is the possibility to buy a car with "legal issues". To keep it short: beware, and preferably buy via dealer commission to avoid getting ... (you know)

Be careful with 'this' site as there seems to be a trend at the moment where 'some' members have an opinion that goes alittle 'to' far and have a real hate for this car and the dealers.

If they hate it so much why do they spend there evenings sitting on this website spilling there hate for the car.....I wish they would do us all a favour and a buy another brand of car or give it a rest for a while eh????.....................say your piece then move on.

In simple terms, road test the car, check its history if all seems ok it will probably serve you well.....as mine has so far.

Laters Pumatron.....sits, waiting for the comments on this one!!!!
You can't really blame people who have had problems being so infuriated that they want to air their views with fellow owners who will understand their problems. What are we supposed to do round up all those who dare speak out against the civic and lock them, and deny them their opinion.

I can understand your dissapointment that there are folk who are so fed up of their cars that they feel they need to shout about it. But imagine it was you and you had spent your hard earned cash on something that turned out to be really poor and let you down constantly.

Just for the record I am of the same opinion of my car as you, I really like it and love driving it, I've only had it two months but I think it is the best car I've ever owned. Hopefully I won't find out the misery that some have of owning a right lemon.

It is a shame that this site has been ruined by constant fighting over the civic........I am not saying we cannot express an opinion....do it....get it off your chest then for the good of man kind move on!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lights touch paper and runs..........
But if the car keeps going wrong with different faults, as a few have, or those people can't afford to simply swap a car that they pushed the boat out to buy in the first place, and now it has lost too much money. I really sympathise with them and don't mind them having their say, as I put myself in their position and think about how I would feel.

So are you saying that I cannot have an opinion now......I agree with what you have said so far, as you have agreed with me on certain points but I think you should apologise for your statement saying that I dislike members who do not agree with me, as I DO not!!!!!!!

This is getting personal now against me for expressing an opinion.....

You are as entitled to your opinion as the next person, I simply feel you should be a little more tolerant of people who feel so strongly about the problems they have had with their cars that they wish to express their opinions. And not flippantly dismiss them.

You implied that you were banging your head against a brick wall discussing this matter with me, displayed by your nice little animated post displaying this action no less than three times. I aren't offended as this is your opinion and I respect it.

It's not getting personal, if I'm not allowed to discuss this with you without you getting offended I won't bother.

I like my Civic and enjoy driving it, but I'm also man enough to accept it has if flaws! The flaws I can accept, all new models have problems, especially the early builds - what I can't accept is the dealers reluctance to sort things and the appaulling attitude of Homda UK!

For me the after sales service is a big part of car ownership and Honda suck at it!

Ok, will agree to disagree. If I have offended you then I apologise. I hope I have not made an enemy of you.
I do feel for the people who have had problems as I have had a few with my civic but take the rough with the smooth and compared to other cars I have had and worked on the civic is brilliant.
I worked in the motor trade for 14 years so have seen it all, perhaps that is why I put my guard with this matter as I have had 1000's of customers shouting at me over the years and have become complacent with it all as it was the only way to 'get through' the day.
The motor trade was effecting my health because of it and was killing me.
Thankfully I no longer do the job and changed direction a few years ago and now have my full health back.

All the best Pumatron.

No mate I'm not offended. Life's too short to let a minor difference of opinion make you mad. I like the forum just the way it is , it would be very boring if we all agreed all the time. In my opinion it is run very well by everyone involved, members included.

I really like my car too and I hope I never have much reason to moan about it.

Thank you!
You guys have just restored my faith in "CIVINFO"

Okay,
We all have a difference of opinion (this site would be pretty boring if we all had the same opinions)
It is good to see you guys agreed to disagree and let the matter drop!

A few others on here could learn a thing or two from you guys.
