I found anything from the Admiral group are the cheapest (for me) - elephant, bell, admiral etc.. But the only answer is to decide 100% on your variables;- where its kept, what type of use, how many miles (I overestimated in my first year and it probably cost me more than it should) and then on a free afternoon pick up the phone book and ring everyone.

The fact of the matter is you are going to get absolutely hammered by the insurance companies because they know they can get away with it. It makes no sense and in my view contributes to the number of uninsured drivers on the road, we need a national driver registration scheme where insurance is monitored, controlled and even subsidised by the state. Also, I'm confused as to why you decided to buy a £12,000 car after seeing one advertised for £9,000 - I thought dealers were supposed to work the other way round. But that is by the by.

Your car is a group 4 insurance car, £2k seems astronomical - even at 18. I'm 21 now and still paying north of £1k on 2.2 with 1yrs ncd.

At the end of the day there are only 3 or 4 major underwriters - who have to decide the risk (which again is BS - You get a higher quote by about 5% being a student living at home than living away- it doesn't make any frikkin' sense!).
While I agree that young, male, drivers are generally causing most accidents, there are safe young male drivers that are being penalised for the idiocy of others (probably uninsured, yet still counted in the statistics)

So, in summary:
- The insurance system is a joke, but a necessary one.
- Don't buy a car until you are 21, with a few years as a named driver (yeah, I forgot to follow that one, too)
- You will be paying alot
- Keep the car garaged (if that's an option), move to a safer area, don't use the car to commute, add you mother or grandmother or great-uncle Ernie who has a phd and is now a priest to the policy
- Don't get any points on your licence or else the next year, you will have to sell one of your kidneys to afford the insurance

Edit: Angie your right about the thing with the Garage, makes no sense. Oh yeah, that brings me to my final point about young lads getting cheaper insurance - have a sex change.
One thing I did find was putting a female my age (wife / gf or any friend not family) was better than parents.

Only reason I can think is that you have settled down.

Try a company called A Plan. They quoted me half the price of the nearest quote on an 2004 Impreza WRX at the age of 22. Been with them 3 yrs now as no company can come anywhere near their price.

tel: 01635 874646

Online quotes are usually more than when you personally ring up and ask with smaller brokers, so I would try the phone more than the keyboard.

Good Luck.

I have a cheaper remedy.
Granted, somewhat ruthless but worth considering
Whats costing you is the price of the car and your age
Drive around in a 'banger in group 3 or less for a few years and build up a no claims bonus (if you can)
Then..Hey Presto!!
Cheaper insurance!!
If you get one with fog lights on too..even better!!

My CTR is only £313 per year, I am a bit older, obviously, but I would be suicidal if that was the cheapest quote I could get.

Are you sure that your down as the main driver and not as an named driver? Just in the event of an accident if you are only a named driver and your dad is the main driver then your dad will have to prove that he drives the car the most with copys of recipts and stuff.

I love when I see quotes like that, I'm 23 0 NCB as my Mini was insured under my Mum before as she drove it more than me!

I have my parents on the policy as they sometimes do borrow my car if its the last one up the drive and i'm paying £517 for the year on my CTR GT

My Fiesta 1.25 (Grp 6) cost £2000 first year to insure (fully comp), so over £2000 seems alot, but it was only worth £4k so maybe that makes the difference, second year, I got insurance for about £800..

Try everyone, is the only way..

Just a personal opinion of course... But I have had a bad experience with Budget Insurance. Yes there cheap but I'm sure you get the service you pay for. It wouldn't be so bad if I was trying to make a claim. But I'm not. You wouldn't believe what a mess they have made of cancelling one policy and starting up a new one. Sounds easy enough to me. But no... despite the fact that no one ever answers the phones at their service call centre from one hour to the next. When you do get through you fight a losing battle trying to be understood as they are very poor at understanding English (all foreign call centres). Then of course they assure you that it will all be sorted out and when it becomes apparent that it hasn't been sorted out, the whole cycle starts all over again. I'm still waiting for a refund from them which I was assured would be paid back into my account before the money for the new policy would be taken out. Guess what... my account is now well out of pocket due to their incompetence.
All insurance companies seem great when you get a cheap quote off them and as long as you never need to claim or sort any problems out, I suppose you'll never know a good company from a bad one. Well (in my opinion) Budget are a bad one... YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

You are 23 with 0 NCD bonus and your car costs you £517 to insure???

That is good if you are the policyholder and main driver.

I am indeed the main driver and policy holder, But i'm also Female........Granted i'm a bloke in a womans body lol! If I was a 23 year old male then it would be a hell of a lot more!

I have to say when I got a quote from Honda, they were the only ones who had asked if I had ever driven something as powerfull as the ctr and my run around at that time was the M3 due to me selling the mini and that brought the premium down but not by that much, about £300 bringing it in at £1450, which was actually more expensive than Zurich without detailing all that.

Did my policy I have over the net so never gave any details about past driving experience

Have a think about this though Angie, if you had held insurance in your own name since you passed your test at 17 or even 18, you would by now be entitled to 5 years NCD bonus which equates to 65% discount. Obviously if you hadn't made a claim.

If your premium of £517 is not discounted as you say you have 0 NCD then by applying a 65% NCD to it, it would be £181.

Are you getting any sort of discounts to get this premium of £517

No, you wouldn't, because

1) 65% is a made up figure (it varies greatly insurer to insurer)

2) The % discount isn't applied at the end of the quote, it's often applied part way through, so for example

Base insurance price for Civic type R GT is £200 * 0.65 and then you add on additions for driver, postcode, driving history, convictions etc etc.

Ah right is that how they do it. To be honest I've always wondered. I'll try it in a real quote for myself with varying levels of NCD.

I was starting to think I better get a quote from Admiral if Angie can get that sort of price with 0 NCD.

Yeah, it is a con when you see what the insurance companies advertise! Another one that gets me is the "free insurance if we can't beat your best quote" kind of thing - if they can't beat it they simply say "sorry, we can't insure you on this car" - ridiculous!
