Do dealers want to sell cars ?

I've been hunting for a Type S GT diesel this week and found a few possabilities. Eventually decided on a 57 plate ex demo, Vivid blue with blades on it, which was up for 16k. I was hoping to get this for 15500 plus 3k for my old car and pay the remaining with hard cash. I thought with the crap weather and it being end of month i'd be able to do the deal i was after - my mistake. Offered peanuts for my motor (below glass guides poor condition and my car is in good nick for it's age) and wouldn't shave a penny of the 16k price. So I walked. Shame as it's a nice motor. Seems some dealers won't budge on price, even if it means the car sitting there getting covered in snow and rain for another 3 months. Maybe I'll keep my car and come back in the summer and get another 6 months out of my car and 6 month interest on my cash.

you usually find that if your trading they won't budge on the price. Its one or the other and some dealer do offer lower for your car as they may struggle to sell it on

Also, if the dealer has met their target for the month then they don't have to try and sell you anything. But some are better than others for deals, its just unfortunate

Most trade-in cars nowadays are sold at auction...

Why not sell your car privately, puts you in a much stronger position as you'll be a solely cash buyer.....

Yeah, I offered my 2000 (X reg) facelifted BMW 5 Series 520i SE (Xenon upgrades etc. etc.) as trade in and got told "we don't want it!!!!", and "you'll get a better price on the new car if we don't take it!" It costs them to auction them and so they don't want the hassle.

The dealer I bought from was very reluctant to do a trade in with my Mini which was already up for sale (I had no intention of part exchanging, just wanted to know what they would think of offering) they told me that they would have the local mini dealer on the phone wanting to buy it at cost. They supposedly get hounded by some dealers for specific cars, which also makes them less reluctant to give you what its worth

My car was a Skoda Octavia vRS. Spent an hour cleaning it in the freezing cold this morning and then get offered a packet of crisps and a mars bar for it Maybe I should get the scratch on the rear door removed as well, as it seems to be an opportunity for the dealer to knock a grand off it's true value.

I also agree that traders just don't want older cars as trade in's as they can't sell them on their own forecourt. Selling private can be just as bad. Too many bods wanting it for peanuts. Although if I sold private, i'd prob get more for my car and then I'd just get a brand spanker from an Internet dealer and by-pass all the haggling that's involved when going to dealers.

The hunt for Vivid goes on. Watch this space.
