I always wonder whether there's more money in a petrol car sale, because my dealer really pushed the petrol. But for me there was no choice, since I prefer the driving characteristics and tuneability of the diesel.

If financial savings are your primary objective, you'd be surprised at how well the diesel comes out even at low mileages. Have a look here: http://www.civinfo.com/forum/buying/...hip-costs.html

Pottsy is right. Personally given the choice between the 1.8 petrol and the diesel, I'd have bought the diesel.

I was always told that diesels were only good if you did over 15k miles a year, but I would have had the diesel instead of the petrol. Quicker 0-62 and more mpg.

Dealers are probably pushing the Petrol as they probably sell too many diesels for Honda's liking

Been a diesel fan for a long time now even though I do not do a big mileage.
Had diesel VW's, Pugeots and now Civic.
I would go diesel.....

Dealers get paid no more to sell a diesel than they do a petrol and to be honest, a simple sum can be used to roughly work out if you go diesel/petrol.

1) work out the difference in purchase cost between both fuel type models
2) work out how many miles you do per year
3) look for arguments sake at 3yrs of driving
4) get the mpg figs for both fuels along with the gallon cost of each fuel
5) work out the cost of 2 x 3 for both of 4
6) if the diesel cost outweighs the cost difference of purchasing, then VERY ROUGHLY you can work out whats best for you.

i've also pm'd you...

Only from a financial perspective. I think the first thing to do in IMHO, is have a test drive of each and see which one you like best .

What about the other huge parts of the equation:

7) The cost of servicing?
8) The difference in resale values between the two cars?

I did say very roughly. there is obviously the cost of servicing but then ther eis the honda happiness £500/£850 scheme and yes of course, theres always the likes n dislikes of how it drives.
