A lot comes down to if you prefer diesel or petrol which is a matter of taste.
I drive a petrol, but then we don´t get the diesel over here. The diesel is more expensive, but you are getting it for £600 which is cheap. The diesel is more expensive to service. As it has 100 miles on the clock you don´t know how it has been driven (run-in). There are a few faults which seem more predominant on the diesel like flat battery, but this is only on a few cars. The diesel can be remapped to 190 bhp!!! The diesel has better fuel economy. If I was given the choice you have, and could live with silver, I would go for the diesel (and a remap). |

If it was me I would go for the petrol in black, they look a lot better when they are nice and clean, but hard to keep clean, but you would know that all ready.

tough call - I personally prefer black - but at only £600 premium for the diesel...
I love my diesel FWH is right, you won't know what has happened in the first 100 miles - but unless it's been trashed to death (unlikely), it shouldn't make any real difference. make sure you will be the first owner though, and that it hasn't been pre-registered. the other bits - spare wheel ,mats, doorsill garnish, fulltank of fuel and 12moths road tax you should still get the fuel and the road tax, might have to haggle over the spare wheel (circa £90), mats (about £50) and doorsill garnish (£can't recall, think about £60?) but I still love my diesel (Had I mentioned that? |

Yesterday completed a 60 mile A road/back road trip and confirmed again what an accomplished, satisfying and effortless car the 2.2 is to drive quickly Your'e post describes your'e offer as pre-reg with the same extras as the petrol.Sounds pretty good to me,although a question mark remains over the 100 miles on the clock?(my pre-reg had 3) P.S. if the car's been demonstating for its 100 miles, thats room for negotiating the price Last edited by cb550; 2nd March 2008 at 10:41. I bought a pre-reg type s gt. When I picked it up it had just over 100 miles on he clock, although I brought it from Milton Keynes and the car was at their Slough showroom. Car was in excellent condition and obviously unused.
I have had it 2 weeks now and love it. I previously had an Audi A3 with the same engine you have in the golf 140bhp tdi, and their is nothing to compare, no smoke in the morning or when you push it, quiet, smooth, and lovely and responsive, so much I have now done over 1000 miles, any excuse to use the car. Only downsides, build not quite up with the Audi, but still very good. Out of the two much prefer the Type S. Out of interest, are you getting a good part ex? I tried some local dealers in the midlands and the deals were not so good. Have a look on the Honda used website they have a some pre-reg cars and you can usually do a deal before you have to travel. And it also enables you to play off dealers against each other |

£600 for the diesel is good....so guess it comes down to colour preference and the milege you do? As mentioned above Diesel is more to service, and will you do the miles to make Diesel the better option??

If it is a 5 door Glass values at average condition £14900. I would push for another £1000 off. You can see the Glass values on Vauxhall website (off all places!)

Personally,as your used to a diesel, i'd go for the diesel option but dont bother with the re-map - you will instantly invalidate the warranty. However, both look like good deals from here.....

just for completeness, SuperChip price includes a warrenty for their work.
Not sure if anyone has ever tried to claim, or on what warrenty, if an engine were to fail (or a clutch or whatever else) |

just to advise further on the modding/remap of a cars ECU, if this is done it will immediately render the manufacturers warranty invalid. So, if you do have anything like this done, make sure that the company responsible offer a full cover warranty for any damage that may occur.

Also how many miles a year do you do?
A very rough rule of thumb is that if you do less than 15000 miles, then it's generally more economical in a year to buy a petrol version. Over that distance you'll save money with the additional diesel efficiency, even if the service cost, diesel price etc. is more. I have a '06 1.8 ES and it's averaging 42mpg at the moment. That is work run, and also weekend pop to the shops and motorway long journeys. If I just cruise the motorway, then i'm looking at about 47mpg. But that is very boring driving :P Last edited by dilfred; 5th March 2008 at 16:05. |

Reply to Dilfred.
I travel between 21,000 to 25,000 miles in a year typically. A fortnights holiday in France will easily add another 2,000 miles to that total.
I am also very fortunate in not having to pay directly for my CIVIC's maintenance and running costs. With the distances I travel stops to refill a petrol-engined vehicle were far too frequent in my experience. My daily commute includes about 70 miles of motorway driving and like everyone else, I don't stick to the legal limit all of the time. It's still quite difficult to return much less that 47mpg however. I am steadfast in my (infrequent) use of the specific Castrol synthetic oil that Honda reccomend. And, incidentally, I do like the diesel CIVIC very much! |
