The car we had insured with Elephant had no mods. We didn't go with Elephant with the Civic, but including the upgrade alloys increased the quote from them by a little bit They seem to ask the same questions about modifications as everyone else.

A sex-change is the best way to bring the cost way down...

OK, its only a 1.4i, but my 17 year old daughter with 8 months licence is only paying £1300 for her new civic SE+, and when it comes up for renewal in a couple of months they told her she will get 30% no claims and it will be a bit cheaper as she will then be 18 (in a couple of weeks). That's entirely in her name. No named drivers or anything.

That's from Tesco Value insurance - who in her/our experience are very good. Someone ran in to her last car, and they gave A+ service sorting it out and getting her excess back and everything. Recommended.

My son has a Type R and he is the main Driver on the policy, I am a named driver and it brought his premium down by £317 and means that I can drive his car if need be and I am fully covered, if I drove it on my insurance I would only be covered third party

Ah, but as I had a recent claim on my insurance, when I was added as a named driver on her last car, they put the price up!

Insurance is baffling, my wife is a named driver on my policy, she had an accident last year, when I renewed my insurance I told them to remove my wife from my insurance as she had made a claim on her insurance and I was amazed when the response was that it still came out £29 cheaper to leave her on the policy

In my case, the claim on my insurance was actually because of our son who is a named driver.

However, even though it was me as the named driver on my daughters car and no mention of our son, they still increased the premium on her car because of the claim on my insurance which was no fault of mine ....

You are talking about car insurance so don`t look for any logic.

I totaly agree with you, when I renewed my insurance 2 years ago I did a search on confused.com and saga quoted me £167, some of the others went to around £400, I could not understand the vast difference in prices. I have been driving for 34 years and never had to claim. How do they work the premiums out ?

It's all largely down to target markets and loss leaders...

Saga, for example, will only offer insurance to people over 50.
They only compete in this market, and in their experience, they know how much they expect to have to pay out on average per person they insure.

Plus, they then have a 'hook' into you.
They know (generically) about the sorts of products / offers which people over 50 are interested in, and again, becuase they specialise in this, they are probably pretty good at it by now.
And they know that becuase you have insurance through them, there is a good chance that you will at least open an envelope from them, instead of just chucking it in the recycling along with all the other junk mail.

Tesco insurance work in a similar way, but obviously with a different audience.

And so do all the rest

As a test, especially for any of you out there living at home with your parents

Run both your sets of details through confused / Tesco / moneysupermarket / your own favourite insurance comparison web site.

I would be willing to bet that the best quote for you is not from the same people who give the best quote for them

That's so true TT.
As Saga, were so much cheaper for me with the car, I asked them for quote's on my house contents and buildings insurance.
Another- nearly £200 a year saved.

In general, if you claim, no matter who's insurance you are on, your premium will increase as you are proven to be a greater risk than previously. If you get added to another policy as a named driver, even though you may have in the past been able to bring the premium down (lower risk, more responsible etc etc) if you have had a claim then you lose that. Women are a different kettle of fish as the discounts they get for being ladies, by far out weigh the claim potential (no matter what us guys say or think) therefore, even though a previous posters wife had had a claim, taking her off the policy left the male as the sole driver and only risk - statistically a greater risk.

All insurance risks etc are based on statistics, the likelihood and potential for a certain event to occur.

Dunno why, am 23 and live in a good insurance postcode.

They had the cheek to send me an email saying the quotes generated for me are only valid for a limited period of time.

That's pretty much normal.

Otherwise, it would be a bit like Northern Rock stating at their AGM a year back that their shares "Will Not Fall".
