Car only serviced once at 24,000miles :(
Hi there
I have put down a deposit on a 06 plate NHB EX 2.2 diesel and have noticed that it has only 1 stamp in the service book at around 24,000 miles. Can't remember the name of the honda dealer that it was serviced at but if that is the case does this mean that the warranty has been invalidated due to lack of servicing? Does the civic work on a variable servicing schedule (is there a countdown timer in the trip computer?) It is currently at 28,000 miles, should this be serviced asap? Only paid a deposit for it so far so any help much appreciated. |

Wiki gives good info on servicing.
Maintenance Schedule - Civinfo Wiki Are you buying from a Honda dealer? There is no on-board service indicator or countdown. It should have been serviced at 12 500, the next one being at 25 000 (or every 12 months, which ever comes first). It appears that the 12 500 service was missed (or undocumented). The first and second service are also different. So another question is WHICH service was carried out at 24 000 miles - the 12,5k one or the 25k one? If the 25k service was done at around 24k and you are now on 28k then another service now will do no differance. What I have done in the past is check with the dealer where the car has been claimed to have been serviced to see what they have in their system. This is because it is just about as easy to forge a stamp as it is to forget to put one in. The car MIGHT have been serviced ok, but it is not in the book. If you cannot get written proof of this you should be careful. Formally, the warranty is invalidated if the car is not serviced according to schedule. Also missing the first service (oil change) is not advisable. |

If indeed it wasn't serviced before this mileage I would not take it. There is a chance, however, that the service was performed but not documented - in any case, you should be able to check that with the Honda central database - as long as you know the VIN number. Any dealer should be able to do this.

Walk away! Even if a service has been done can you be sure which one it was, especially if it was a non-honda garage. With an incomplete service history the future value of the car will be poor and there are always more cars out there to buy. If the dealer said the car had a full service history and it hasn't he is in breech of contract and your deposit has to be returned. Good luck and happy hunting.

Chances are that the car was serviced and the book never stamped.
You wouldn't believe the amount of people who have their cars serviced, but don't bring their books with them. We usually tell them to pop in when they are next passing, but some never do. If I were you I'd contact the dealer that supplied the car, as that was where the first service was probably carried out. As far as I'm aware there isn't a national database for service history.
