Type R GT Insurance

I've just agreed finance to buy a Civic Type R GT and just need to get my insurance sorted. I'm 21 and aware that it's gonna be costly. Best quote i've managed so far is from elephant.co.uk for £1800 for 10 months, which is ok but I don't want to be paying extra unnecessarily. I have 0 NCB as I have been driving as a named driver for the past 3 years. Anyone in a similar situation to me or can anyone recommend any insurers? Am I better getting quotes over the phone as this isn't really an average case? Is it worth approaching the 'Specialist' companies such as Adrian Flux who specialize in unusual insurance cases and insurance for performance cars?

Many thanks in advance,

Josh

These two companys seem to be good for young drivers. Im currently with premium choice they specialise on insurance for performance cars and young drivers and even young drivers with driving offences.

I got a quote of £956 for a type r just under 2 years driving and nearly 2 years no claims and ive got 3 points on my licence for speeding 8mph over the speed limit on a dual carridge way.

Again it does vary depending on postcodes and where the car is kept at night etc

UK car insurance, van insurance & business insurance - QUINN-direct

Premium Choice - Performance Vehicles

I take it the Performance Choice people don't like 'normal cars'... I just got a quote of over £4000 for my car

Remember that some insurance companies won't touch young drivers ie those under 25 on high insurance group and large engine cars.

If you live at home then it may well be worth your while seeing if adding the 'rents to the policy will lower the prem. Also if they do have to drive it they are also covered fully comp. Also how many miles are you going to do in it, what your going to use it for ie to a place of work and what your job title is all makes a difference. I don't do a lot of miles so that reduces my premium. There is no point in saying i'm going to do 10,000 miles when you know your only going to use it every other weekend and clock up 5,000.

I got a good deal with Admiral (which are the same company as elephant) but my sister got a better quote with elephant and she is 21 too and that was on the Z4

Insurance is all about risk assessment and previous payouts. Over the years, I found these make the most difference:-

Negative
If you're < 25yrs old
Have little NCD
You have numerous convictions e.g. more than 3 points
Your job type (e.g sales)
Your average milage is high
Insurance companies previous payout history on certain cars
High Insurance group (speaks for itself)
Bad Post Code

Positive
Good/protected NCD
25+ (30 even better)
max 3 points on license
you work in an admin-type job
low social/commuting milage
the car doesn't have a bad history e.g Subaru Impreza - some companies won't touch them now.
Nice, safe (boring) post code

Best advice is to shop around. Elephant, Bell, Admiral were all pretty reasonable when I was insuring my Impreza.

Also try adding your mum/father to the policy as that's knock hundreds of pounds off mine in the past. Even better if you can insure through the same company as your parents own car or home insurance.

My 9yr old Impreza valued at £4K is £200 more to insure than a brand ew CTR worth £20K !

Several posts recycled.

Please do not make comments about each other, please just stick to discussing the facts.

This thread was originally about high insurance premiums for younger drivers and what could be done about it.
Please also try to stay on topic.
A user was asking for tips on reducing insurance costs on a Type R, not asking for suggestions on other cars to drive.

Thank you.

I'd make a quick trunk call to elephant.com and go for the £1800 quote.

Several posts included some valid points but also references to some of the discussions that were being recycled.

Rather than edit posts, they were recycled in their entirity.
