I am concerned!!!
Hi all,
I mentioned the other day that while I was sat parked up at the side of the road last Wednesday for about 30/40 mins while the ignition was on, but the engine was not running a nice bright amber light poped up onto the dash with a ping and displaying the wee man with the airbag warning light. At the same time the autolights that were on flicked on and off in rapid sucession. All rather strange and very un-nerving for me and my passenger. So I turned the ignition off, took the key out and put it back it and turned the igintion back on, this time only the SRS Airbag idicator came on, so I turned the igintion off and and removed the keys and sat there in the cold and dark for another 10 mins. I then started it and hey presto! No more light and everything seemed to be okay, but as the hand book states you should get it checked so thats what I did this morning and boy have I got issues!!! Now when that happened I didn't panic and I didn't call Honda Assist as suggest by the guy who booked the car in to be looked at, it didn't render the car undrivable just made me decided to go home, which was only about 5/6 miles along the road. I then take it in this morning, 8am all happy in the knowledge that I am leaving it with what I regard as the best dealer in town.....then some bloke in a suit come outs about 8.20am and I tell him yet again what I had or hadn't as the case maybe doing at the time and he says; 'According to the diagnositcs, that fault occured at 93 mph and at 9600 rpm.......did you miss a gear?' Did I miss a gear??? And excuse me the fault occured while I was parked up at the side of the road, on a 30 mph road to be exact! It was heavy rain and hail that night so me and my mate had decided to ditch the pub (as we walk there) and go to the flick (Orange Wednesdays, the cheapskate he is) Its also a 30 mph at the moment all the way there due to road works and the road surface is shocking! So am I at a lose to why it gave this reading. I said to the guy I would phone my mate and he would confirm that we had been sat there for a good while and hadn't moved, but he said it was alright but all the time asking me if I was sure? How much more sure can I be? He then said they hadn't seen this with the FN2, but had seen this error in the EP3 but it could just be a bad connection providing bad data! Oh thanks for that so according to my car its doing 93mph at 0mph on the speedo and doing 9600rpm when its doing 0rpm! I have also got 360 miles out of the two tanks I have filled my car with in the past month and I've only done just over 2500 miles in the 6 months. Getting 360 miles from a tank doesn't sound like i've been booting it, infact my mate was slating me only last night for driving the car too carefully and not revving it!!!! Was really not happy with the guy who spoke to me, made me out to be a liar. Not happy at all! Luckily for him the rest of the guys there are spot on and I have even recommended them to another 3 folk in the last 2 days!!!!! I have raised my concern with Honda UK as I would hate to see what speed and rmp reading it would give if a fault occured while it was actually moving. I have been told that they can only really see what it causing it when the light comes on again, hopefully never....and hopefully this is not the state of things to come with my dealer as I actually love them! Sad I know but I just think they are cracking! |

It's a little interesting that the car recording incorrect information, isn't it? So what was the conclusion - to wait and see or try and do something about it?

This sounds similar to like what mine has done a couple of times, on Friday just gone I had to call out Honda assist!
I was cleaning the car inside and had the ignition on with the radio on whilst I cleaned....as you do! When I had finished inside and out, I went to start up and got the airbags sign, radio went scrambled and it would not start at all. Turns out that the battery is not up to the job even for 45 mins of sitting idle and running the radio (according to the guy who came out to get me going again)!! As I said this is the second time it has happened, I know people have had issues with batteries on here and I have trawled through the threads, but it seems our only alternative is to not listen to the radio as we sit idle in our cars!! |

Would help if it was correct tho! Seen as I was doing 0 mph at the time the fault occured!

My airbag lights have come on once before whilst I was driving (doing 30mph) so when I stopped at traffic lights I turned the engine off and waited for a bit (long traffic lights thankfully) and when I started it again it was fine and it hasn't happened since but I'm keeping my eye on it.

That means if it happened while you where doing 30mph, it would read 2790mph!!!! Wow real jet fighter there. And how exactly would missing a gear ping on the airbag light??? Amazing technology huh!

All very confusing and a bit worrying. I wonder if it's linked to leaving the ignition on for that length of time, maybe something gets too hot, was that key position 1 or position 2 ?

Position 2. I don't usually do that as I remember one of my Dad's mates leaving the keys in position 2 in a BMW while he washed his car and it burnt the transponder out resulting in having to get a new key.

Bit dire to have to worry about such things, must admit to be tempted to replace the battery with the lightened more powerful JDM sealed one.

If it did happen at 70mph Angie, with all that going on at once, it could put you off your stroke.
Tis a bit worrying, -- too many gismo's on modern cars. |

Hi angie, i know for a fact the dealers are having loads of electrical problems with the ctr.
When you go in to the dealer with the eml on they plug the hds tester in to it and read off codes. Every code has a snap shot of when it happened so they can only really go on what the computer tells them. I wouldn't worry too much. |

Car Electronics
Personally, I always leave the engine running when in a Car Wash or when parked-up for an extended period. Once had a car (a sod*ing Renault) 'die' on me after exposure to a 'drag-thru' wash. As to parking-up for a long period - well - any car's electronics will be consuming power even when you don't actually 'do anything' (as long as the power is on). Having said that, the Civic doesn't seem to have a very big battery - can anyone save me the walk out to read the handbook - how much juice does it actually hold ? Last edited by J. Maybe this is their new way to dispute warranty claims... have the electronics give out dodgy readings and then blame the driver!
The recording the speed is interesting, do you reckon the authorities could access that in the case of an accident and use it against the driver? |
