my mate has a remapped vxr kicking out OVER 300 bhp and YES there is torque steer but easy enough to handle once you get use to it. well IMO anyway
Why would he lie? Hes alot of things but i am pretty sure he tells the truth even if it is abit bias to what he drives himself...

Have not driven a tuned VXR, but high powered (250 bhp+) FWD cars are usually horrid in my opinion.

it is very difficult to put the power down in my mates VXR, especially when looking for a rapid take off but it is a BEAST, the noise is immense. and with TC off it is MUCH easier
HOWEVER after driving the R he is looking to sell the VXR in the summer after a years ownership
i wonder what he will be looking to buy

No.

Have not driven one of those either, but 200 bhp on the front wheels can be ok.

agreed but nothing gives you a grin as big as VTEC does
also in the real world, with the R being lighter than its rivals, that extra power held would not lose an R

I think if you compare the CTR to the other hot hatches it wouldnt compare well in terms of power. However, the CTR is a complete package. Its just stunning!!!!!!

agred, hell i played around in a old shape tyre r for a little while, 4000 rPm = very big ZOOM! I never understood the hype of vtec until I drove a Type R

I know its a slightly odd comparison, but that was the choice I had, there was no chance of a R () and as mentioned before the only thing that put the VXR in the picture was its the same price as the SE 2.2. My choice was tough as I miss having a crazy car, but in the last two years of owning a diesel have grown to love the economy of it. So had to look at going for all out loony car with raw GO and very sporty (yes almost boy racery hothatch style) looks and 25mpg, or settle for something less insane in the form of a 2.2D civic which can be tweeked up a little to improve performance while being affordable to run.
Personally I have never liked the astra interior and can be heard abruptly stating this when people mention maybe getting a astar diesel sri, a few years ago interior looks would have counted for Zero and exterior for all. Now I drive the better part of 100miles a day to work, I've quickly come to enjoy a comfortable cabin with toys and buttons and eye candy - one the reasons I chose the Civic over the cheaper Astra diesels initally, also they were reporting lower MPG then my current 1.6TD C4.
So Civic it was, then they came upon a problem - the model civic offered was infact the never seen before and mysteriously rumoured Civic 'S'. The dealer confirmed that it was a base model, no luxurey at all, no radios, no leky windows, steel wheels etc. As soon as I heard this I said no way, not when other companies are offering Sport and ES models for a little more then I was being quoted for the S. With that they said they had just received a new special offer, for £5 more I could have a Astra VXR..... So by this time I was all set on the civic (In fact my Collinite arrived today from the US), but with the dissapointment of the bad news the VXR seemed a possibility (memories of youthful speed and fun came straight back) and left me in a proper muddle over what to do. So they confirmed that the VXR was available, and then also said that they could have a Civic SE by mid May ....... which really left me stuck - cheap fun or economical power. So I came here to get some help on getting my mind made up - and pretty much right after posting I called and ordered the Civic anyway
I really cant wait now and a, looking forward to rubbing my Collinite all over the lovely red paintwork!!!!

astra verus civic ,only one option

i have had my honda civic 2.2 ictdi es for just over a year and have done 21000 miles, recently my works van went in for repair and i was given the astra,to be brutally honest the astra is not a patch on the honda for build quality or driveability ,the civic diesel is so much better to drive,it is not until you drive something else for a while you realise how good the civic is

Charming, I think.....

I've spent over 7 years as a Vauxhall salesman, 2 as a a VW salesman and am now Honda, so in answer to the previous (sarcastic) question, yes , I've driven plenty of VXR's and each and every one of them goes sideways on takeoff with TC on or off. The torque steer is appalling. Its not just JC that says it, its EVERY journo who has driven one and written about it.

I'd be interested to see how much of the 19-20K Neemstar's friend gets back after one year of ownership, 11-12 at a guess....

If you drove both you will find the VXR a flying machine which cant fail to put a smile on your face but once the "need for speed" has worn off your driving an Astra... all be it a fast astra. The civic diesel is a great pocket rocket but does'nt actually try to be anything more than a civic diesel.
I think the decision is easy...... If you want a car which is fast buy the astra....
If you want a car that is an all round quality drive and one you will want to drive 2 years on then choose the civic....
