[Questions] In a dilemma what to buy?

I have decided to purchase a new civic at the beginning of july.I love the design of the civic and the handling/drive of the car.
Anyway i decided to buy a TYPE S GT 1.8 in alabastor silver with optional '18' blade alloys,front splitter,colour coded rear spoiler.I then realized that with the extras it was nearer the price of TYPE R GT,which i really like but could not justify the expense and running costs.
I really am in a dilemma with what to do?I have these following questions/queries re. the civic TYPE R GT.Any help/advice would be really appreciated?

1)On average i do around 100-150 miles per week on a combined urban cycle,what will be a realistic petrol consumption per gallon for the type r? How much on average in £'s per week?

2)Tyres-How often on average do they need replacing?How much to relplace a '18' tyre or set of tyres?

3)How much for a service on a typr r?Whats included in the standard warranty?Are the 'honda happiness fixed rate repairs' and 'honda extended warranty' packages worth the extra money when purchasing a new car?

4)Is ther much difference in running costs between a TYPE S GT and a TYPE R GT?

I would really like the TYPE R GT but my sensible/boring side keeps telling me to keep with the TYPE S GT and in the future maybe go for the type r when i've had the type s 2 - 3 years.But then having the type s now i may regret not getting the typr r instead.I just don't know what to do for the best!!!
Any advice/help from the civinfo forum members would be really appreciated.

Go on treat yourself buy the Type R if you don't you'll spend all your time wondering 'what if' and it may spoil your enjoyment of the Type S

As far as I know, servicing costs are very similar for rhe R (2.0)and S (1...Yo will find insurance cost a factor though..but not massive.
IMO No contest..Type R then

Hi Festa,

I can only comment on my car but here goes -

I get about 29mpg in and around town on average (well according to the onboard computer anyway). I spend approx £40-£50 per week but this is on normal or average consumption for me. Obviously the heavier your right foot, the more it's going to cost you.

I don't know much about the standard 18" wheels/tyres as I have the 19" rage allows but there are numerous threads on here about wheels/tires etc. - I do know that the 18" tyres are cheaper to replace etc. than the 19" ones (but I think the 19's look super sexy) - very much depends on what's driving your purchase


I still haven't had my first service yet but I would expect that it would be similar price to normal civic apart from the cost of parts - although someone would need to confirm this. There are posts on here on servicing costs etc. but I'm expecting to pay about £400. I think the warrenty's etc. are standard and not specific for Type R etc. (someone please confirm) I didn't take the 'honda happiness fixed rate repairs' and 'honda extended warranty' packages so can't comment.

I think the running costs differences between the type r and type s would be minimal and with this in mind I would have to thoroughly recommend the Typr R - you only live once, why not enjoy it fully

But not massive, ye right!! if i could have afforded the insursnce (at least £1,000 per year more) and don't even mention the fuel consumption. I reckon the difference is quite big. although i suppose i am only 22 and live in a part of Stoke on Trent which is usually on fire lol

Whatever you buy - starting one thread should be enough to get some advice
I guess a choice between a TypeS-GT and a Type-R is a "gut choice" one has to make on his own after an extended test drive, where I would cast my doubt are the 19-inch wheels. Unless you have perfect roads where you live, these can be really hard for your back to bear... I wanted the type-R once but in the end the reason in me had won and I got a "normal" 5-door iCTDi but then again, it's fast enough to lose one's license anyway

I'm an old git so for me there is little difference..Biggest is fuel costs between the diesel and a CTR

I have Type R GT with 19" Rages so here goes:

1. Approx 28-29mpg with a mixture of town/urban driving
2. Fuel is approx £30 per week and I do 10k miles per year
3. Insurance came in at approx £500 (I'm 32 with full discount)
4. Service - being done as we speak, £110 at main dealers with fully syn oil
5. Tyres - dealer changing front to back but even after 10k miles the fronts have a good 4-5mm on them and rear almost full tread!

So all in all I'd say not bad, I was expecting when I bought the car to at least have 2 new tyres in the 1st 12m at a cost of £200 each, but unless I find anything different following the service I'm a good 6m away yet!!

As 'COB' said, depends on your right foot as to the fuel/tyre costs etc. This may sound like I'm a slow driver, but trust me I'm not, just don't drive like a lune burning rubber at every junction!

Depends what you want.

I have a 1.8 Type S but never entertained a Type R as my reasons were to reduce my outgoings.

I disagree regards running costs being similar. In isolation theres not much in it but add all those little things up and over 12 months its a bit. Obviously some things are individual but for me:

MPG - not Miss Daisy - Motorway
Type S (tested)
35-47
Type R (assumed)
23-35

Road Fund Licence
Type S
circa £150

Type R
circa £300!

Insurance
Type S was over £200 cheaper than my Focus ST (similar risk to TypeR)

Servicing about the same.

Controversial - Hot hatch versions of most models depreciate quicker than run of the mill versions.

Type R performance (near as makes no difference) plus cheaper running costs - result

I had this similar decision sept last year and i went for the TYPE S 1.8 purely for the reason of insurance as it was £1500 more a year (to be expected being 21 and living in Leeds!) though if this is not an issue i would definitely treat yourself with a Type R, as you whenever you drive past one you will always think, if only i had! (like i do! haha) I have the honda happiness and extra 5 year warranty, servicing will cost about £250 when you have to, no real difference for a TYPE R! The petrol consumption is an issue but come on when you have got the fun of a TYPE R you will soon be able to justify the extra cost of fuel! Hope this helps!
