Civic v Octavia
Well I've got the last test drive this Saturday before making my decision. I've got an Octavia 1.8 tsi all day saturday. Thats the turbocharged 160bhp petrol with lots of torque-the salesman said the engine has a supercharger as well but I think he is wrong on that one.
The Civic is my choice so far and I know that for exterior and interior style the Civic has it beaten but i am more concerned with build quality and how it drives. Anyone else out there nearly buy an Octy before buying their Civic? Dave. |

I had the Octavia vRS petrol and sold it cos it scared the hell out of me due to the turbo kicking in just when you were almost past the car/lorry that you were overtaking. Nearly threw me into a hedge or oncoming traffic with the sudden surge of power. Comes in too late and the unpredictable nature and hard ride put my wife off the car pretty quickly!

Cant say absolutely but it was kind of nice driving what was a semi rally car! Too many people disliked it just because of the Skoda image but for the money there was nothing much that could touch it regarding performance just you have to prove it all the time - it gets tiresome...

The problem with Brits and the 'skoda' image is that we still think of skoda as the 'skip' of the 80's and not of the new century.
I love the new Octavia but is was just too big for my needs and the Civic is the better styled car. However, they are not that far apart when it comes to performance, build and so on. The Octavia does need a good face lift to bring it into the 20th century I will give you that but other than that it is a fantastic car. If you need a car that is bigger than the civic and having said that the civic boot, coupled iwth the magic seats, is formidable. Then the Octavia is for you. IF however, you don't need the space then the Civic is definately the car to have - it look amazing. If it is a style choice then the civic wins without question, if it is a practicality issue and you need space then the octavia is the answer. |

You know, people are strange, I dunno if they still think Skoda is an "Eastern European" car brand, and not probably the best car made by the VAG group, which is a fact that no one can deny, it's just that it has the 'wrong' badge.

The Octavia is a nice car, very popular in Denmark with a lot of satisfied owners. What I don’t understand is the talk about size, the Octavia is a “Golf” with a bigger boot.

Civic mm (LxWxH) = 4245 x 1765 x 1460
Octavia mm (LxWxH) = 4572 x 1769 x 1462 = the only major difference is that the Octavia is 13" longer |

I came that close to getting the Octavia, but like others it was the size that put me off. I feel the Civic is a bit nippier and easier to park with its size and the magic seats just sold me. That said, I was so keen for a sunroof that OPENS, that I almost got the Octavia anyway. I decided though that the size and looks of the Civic will mean more to me. But I was very impressed by the build quality of the Skoda and I'm sure the sound system is light yeras ahead of the Honda's.

Wheelbase Octavia 258 cm, Civic 262 cm = Civic 4 cm (1,57”) longer. Max. legroom front Octavia 112 cm, Civic 111 cm = Octavia 1 cm (0,39”) longer. Minimum legroom back Octavia 60 cm, Civic 72 cm = Civic 12 cm (4,72”) longer. Wideness front at shoulder height Octavia 130 cm, Civic 142 cm = Civic 12 cm (4,72”) wider. Wideness back at shoulder height Octavia 137 cm, Civic 136 cm = Octavia 1 cm (0,39”) wider. Height over front seat Octavia 100 cm, Civic 96 cm = Octavia 4 cm (1,57”) higher. Height over back seat Octavia 95 cm, Civic 91 cm = Octavia 4 cm (1,57”) higher. So the cabin in the Octavia is only bigger, when it comes to height. Personally I don’t miss those 4 cm as long as I can have my 186 cm in the front seat, and the tallest kid (my son) at 193 cm in the backseat behind me. But if you have small kids and needs the extra space in the boot, the Octavia could be a more practical choice. |

Test drove both an Octavia and Civic before settling on the civic because:
1) Civic didn't seem much smaller inside but seems a lot bigger on the outside 2) Civic road handling and ride felt much better 3) Interior of civic quite a bit better (comparing EX Civic and top of the range fully spec'd Octavia) I did slightly prefer the Octavia engine of the car I drove though (2.0 diesel Octavia vs 1.8 petrol Civic) |
