Civic or Golf??
Hi
I am a newbie and have joined because I have just landed myself a new job with a company car. I have a pretty good choice but it seems to be coming down to 2. Civic 2.2 i-CTDI EX with roof, leather ( and do I go for the 18" storms)?? or Golf 2.0 TDi GT Sport with touch nav, Cruise and Xenons, Leather. Both will cost the same a month for me. SO! Civic has better spec, and I think more room..... would people agree? Golf has the badge and the image ( for the wife ) and may drive better from what I've read. Can I have some help in letting me know your pros and cons regarding your ownership as I am going to be doing a lot of miles and keeping it for 3 years. Cheers Slappy |

Hi and welcome to civinfo.
Are you really expecting an unbiased answer. The civic gets my vote. I wonder how many the Golf will get. Last edited by Dimplyred; 12th May 2008 at 21:09. |

I could go outside right now and take a pic of a Milano Civic right next to a TDI Diamond Black Golf and see what one takes your fancy?
My next door neighbours have one and well its not hard to see why I chose a Civic over that Best advice is to take them both on a test drive and see what one suits you better. The GT specs in the Golf all come with Leather as standard (probably much to the disgust of the others who had to fork out for it) So your getting a Spec'd up Civic for the same price as the Golf. The Civic has more go about it, but then you may not like the ride of it especially if your going to be lot and lots of miles here and there. Civic is a bigger car (inside and slightly on the outside) than the Golf, but don't be fooled that the Golf is faultless as its not! They always say that the best Golf is not a Golf but usually the Leon I've not really had any issues with the Civic so far but only you can make the choice Last edited by angie4m; 12th May 2008 at 20:17. |

Here are my sweeping generalisations:
The Golf engine is much more agricultural, but with both cars in standard form is quicker. The Honda engine is sublime. The Honda gearbox is better. The Golf ride and steering is marginally better. The Honda has loads more space, especially in the boot. The Golf and Honda build quality is comparable. The Honda is miles more modern inside. The Honda is better value. The Honda dealers are better. |

The Golf might be a tick more "mature" technically, but once I got in it I only wanted out

Great Help, can see i'm not the first to ask this question!!
I have a civic 2.2 EX turning up as a "pool" car and have arranged a long weekend with the Golf. It will help being able to jump in and out of both. So next questions then: Storm Alloys?? any pics with them on ( cant find at my locla dealers which makes me think they aren't very popular. Is the sat nav as good as they say it is? Is HID lights the same as Xenons?? Stupid question what does NHB mean.......... I know laugh it up...... !! Last edited by Slappy; 12th May 2008 at 20:34. |

Go for the Golf unless you want a poorly built car and dreadfull aftersales!
Having owned a Civic for over a year, I would not recommend it to anyone! |

I wouldn't have considered the Golf until I got a Civic, now it looks a more sturdy, functional design compared to the Civic, which imo flatters to deceive.
Is the satnav any good - Yes, but ignore the POI and voice control, they are a waste of time. It tells me the nearest pub to me is 88 miles away. Is HID lights the same as Xenons?? - Yes. I don't think the Civic's HID are worth the effort, they seem little better than ordinary lights to me. NHB - NightHawk Black Essential test for Civic, test it on a rough road. |

I had a similar decision to make - Golf Vs Civic 2.2 EX I found the golf very basic compared to the EX and very boring - My problem with golfs is that no matter the model - they all look the same!
I went for the exact civic you mention above - with 18" Storms and since I've been using it day in day out (about 2 weeks now) it's been bloody fantastic. Here's a pic of my Space Pod and the storms.. |
