Description: High Intensity Discharge (HID) lights, also know as Xenon lights, produce a bright light resulting from an electric arc inside a capsule full of Xenon gas. Many times, HID lighting appears to give off a bluish tint when the bulbs are lit. This technology produces a significantly brighter and whiter light than that of a standard halogen light. HID lights first began appearing on luxury cars in the late 1990s and are becoming increasingly more common as standard equipment.
Purpose: As a newer headlight technology, HID lights provide better visibility at night, which help to improve night time driving safety. HID lights also consume less electricity than their halogen counterparts, reducing load on the cars electrical system. Because of the projector-like technology of HIDS, their high-tech appearance is also a welcome addition to today’s vehicle designs. Maintenance Tips/Suggestions: Check headlight operation frequently and always replace defective bulbs with another of the same exact type. During replacement, be careful not to touch the bulb itself as the oil from your skin can cause the bulb to fail. Cars with HID lights from the factory meet lighting safety requirements for that specific make, year and model. If you plan to retrofit your cars standard halogen lights over to HID, make sure the bulbs/conversion kits result in a legal installation for street use. HID conversions are usually more involved than just a simple bulb replacement and require thorough research before making the decision to switch. Last edited by AubreyS; 1st October 2006 at 20:35. |

Projector Lamps
Hi all,
I agree, the HID lights are really excellent. They light up the road perfectly. However, for some reason, Honda have put HID lamps in the Civic (only on EX and I think on the Sports too), but haven't put them in the Projector. By not doing this, it doesn't show the full spectrum of light. When you see other cars with HID lamps, you can sometimes see the red, green and yellow light refracting from the Projector style lamps, however I feel cheated because my EX has got the HID lamps, but not the projector style lamps! BIG let down in my opinion! |

HID lights are definitly better, I've had them in my last two cars and now I won't buy a car without them. They are on the top of my list for important accessories whenever i buy a new car.
However, it must be pointed out that they are not cheap! Xenon lights come at a premium, especially from dealers. I wanted to replace my nissan 350Z headlights from the 2005 spec (only xenon main beams) to 2006 spec (bi-xenons). Nissan quoted £1000 per light!! Don't worry though, i'm sure they won't be anywhere near that for the civic though! |
