Type R Dilema...
Hi all,
I have had a few fun cars in the past, Mazda Rx8, Renault clio 172 cup, Lexus IS200. I needed more room for my daughters buggy etc and wanted abit of performance so bought 2006 2.2 civic sport. I love this car to bits, but the wife and I both miss the performance of our previous cars which the 2.2 does not quite hit. I started a hunt for a Type R within our budget and put a deposit on a 57 plate type r gt in NHB after a short stint of hunting the local dealers. It is just what we have been looking for, all the room of our 2.2 but performance on par with the RX8/clio 172, also the 3 door would be more practical for our daughter as putting her in her car seat in the rear of the 5 door is awkward due to the small door opening (we have to twist our daughter into her seat without banging her head and breaking our back!!!) I have reservations though. We intend to keep the type r for around 2 years, with fuel prices increasing as they are this is going to hit the residual values of all 'juicy' cars as people will steer clear of cars with poor MPG regardless. Think about it, a civic costs about £50/60 to fill at present, if fuel goes to £2.00 a litre within two years that will mean that a civic will be around £90/£100 to fill!!!!! The average mileage of car useage is 10000 to 12000 miles a year, this could in a type r equal around £80 a week in fuel or £320 a month for about 1000 miles. My concern is that I will pay £18k for a car and in two years time struggle to achieve £5k for it because no one is buying cars of 1.4 or more due to running costs, so do we stick to the 2.2 and let depreciation on that just occur and wait for new technologies in effiency be released by car manufactures and buy one of those or do we follow the type r road and risk loosing out on a rather large amount of cash???? I currently do around 6000 miles a year. Thank you for your thoughts in advance. Regards Pumatron. |

Agreed, - Chipped is the answer.
"Er Indoors" instructed me to take the day off today, so we went for a run- just poodling along at 45 -50,with a little right trotter now and then, as there was no rush. Arrived back on my drive with 54.9 ave' mpg. So, even with a chip, you will be on a winner. Think of the "turn around" costs, if you trade it in.?? |

Hi, we have been offered £10750 trade in for our 2.2, which, looking at the price guide books is about right, but that does mean it has lost £3000 in 8 months!!!! Ouch.
But then saying that theType R will lose a massive amount in the first three years £8000+ according to the sales person when I quizzed him over it, ouch, ouch, ouch. I am not keen on leasing as at the end of the lease will I be left with much? I am not keen on chipping the 2.2, would this effect the warranty left on the car? Oh but I did like how the CTR it drove..........damn you Honda, and damn me for sowing the seed in my head in the first place, there is nothing wrong with the 2.2, but I ve driven the CTR now and it just ain't the same............damn,damn,damn. |

what do you mean left with much ? you pay 280 a month for the 2 years and then give the car back to them. mileage is capped at 10k miles i believe. they also pay your tax for both years you pay for the first service only i think thats how leasing works anyway but as you think 8k over 3 years is too much then leasing aint for you either although Type R residuals are better than any in its class however you know the Type R is the way forward |
