What a mistake lol, I really should have read into it more because I wasn't aware that NCB I get whilst I'm a named driver, isn't transferable to other insurers. A gimmick, basically.

So I'm now in the situation where I thought I could get insured by Norwich Union Simple cover for aprox. £1.3k on a 2.2 Sport, but because my NCB is only valid with Tesco, the cheapest quote moneysupermarket or confused shows now rockets up to a lovely 3k

If I try with Tesco, then for a 2.2 Sport, with my 1 years NCB being taken into account, they want the best part of two grand. And that's only if I pay a lump sum, if I pay monthly, which I'm going to, then it's more around the £2.2k mark.

So, I'm basically tied down to Tesco at the moment unless I want this past year to be wasted. The only option this leaves me is getting the 1.4, (looked at the 1.8, and it was marginally cheaper than the 2.2, but Tesco still wanted an extortionate amount of money), this is fine I suppose, but kind of gutted as was kinda set on the diesel... It's also more than annoying, that whilst insurance on the 1.4 isn't much more than what I'm paying now, so affordable, it's several hundred pounds more than Norwich Union Simple cover quoted me for the 2.2 with 1 years NCB

Anyways, what this boils down to, is if I opt for a 3 year PCP deal on a 1.4, am I tied down to keeping the car for that 3 year term? Obviously, since I don't legally own the car I can't sell it, but after having the car a year would I not be able to trade it for a 2.2? I'd then be 20 (...scary thought) with 2 years NCB (...or one, depending on whether I stay with tesco...) and insurance would be a lot more managable.

Thanks for your help again,

- Tom
Right, dont bother with the internet, RING round the insurance companies, tell them what you have built up with Tesco and tell them about their restrictions. If they want your business (which all insurance companies do) then they will find away of chipping the quote down for you. It will never be cheap due to your age etc but I can assure you that you will get a lower, better figure.

I don't really know that much about PCP deals but what I have read on here, opinions seem to be split over them.

Have a read: Pcp

I suppose it will come down to how much you owe as to whether you can swap it after a year. Perhaps someone who has a PCP deal or a dealer could advise you better.

Doesn't really add up, how assuming I have 1 years NCB, one insurer will quote me £1.3k for a group 9 or 10 car and then another company, Tesco, who I'm effectively stuck with, want £1.4-£1.5k for a group 4 car....am I frustrated? Yeah, lol.

Unhappy

Ah right yeah, haven't really looked at what it would be with me as the named driver. Kind of have to have my own policy as it'll be a bit suspicous if one of my parents are the main driver of the car, when they have their own cars and I'll be away at uni with it lol...so need to keep everything above board with the insurance. ...two weeks left of exams and then I can start seriously looking for a car, so annoying as I've found out insurance companies (Tesco, atleast) don't really work the way I thought they did (lower insurance group = cheaper insurance).

I've looked at cars the same insurance group as the Civic which are cheaper, cars that are a group lower than the Civic and some are uninsurable (although the performance isn't as good as the Civic) whilst others are faster, lower ins. group and cheaper.

And for a laugh I tried getting a quote on a BMW...was either 118D or 120D, whichever one of those is insurance group 12, and that gave me the same premium (give or take about a fiver on the annual premium) as the Civic 2.2 despite being 3 groups higher :S

I hate insurance :S

What I might do is try and save up and pay off the insurance in one go, means I have to wait a bit longer to get the car, but will be a lot easier doing it that way, will only have the finance and petrol..../diesel to worry about then.

And just booked a test drive for a 2.2 ES 1400 on Friday, can't wait lol.

Been trying to organise a test drive for the new Corsa aswell but the local Vauxhall dealership has forgotten to phone me back I went down there a while ago to have a look at the Corsa, around a month ago, and they phoned me today to ask if I was still interested. I missed the call so went to answer phone, rang them back, said they were busy and would call me back in about ten minutes....that was at about 12 o clock lol.

Really looking forward to test driving the Civic anyway, just gonnabe frustrating if I like it because I can't get it for a month or two atleast :P

Am at the moment lol, I sort of realised earlier, that when I do come to get my own policy on the car, I'm not going to be living where I am now. And atm, insurance companies apparantly don't rate where I live very highly Which must have been the reason for the high quotes.

I just put in all the same details again, but changed the postcode to a postcode in Aberystwyth where I'll be going to uni, and the Tesco quote dropped from 2.2k to 1.5k, or 132 a month

End result: Me =

Also, while I'm here may as well ask, does anyone know what I should tell Tesco about where I park the car? Because it'll be on campus, it's not on a drive, street, or in a garage, lol.

Thanks for all the advice,

Tom

haha^

Test drove the Civic earlier, the 2.2, I think it was a Type S GT. Great to drive, but it'll take some getting used to lol. It's not a very long car but it's a lot wider than my Corsa, and just generally felt big, was quite wary of gaps lol.

Not sure if it was the GT, but was definatly atleast a Type S, and after reading about how bad the ride quality would be I was quite suprised that I thought it was quite comfy lol. Seeing as I'd be getting a non-sporty 5dr model it can only get better

Really was impressed with the Civic overall though. Didn't find the split rear window too much of an issue, then again I didn't attemp to reverse it and the seats were amazingly comfy, everything in it felt expensive. My only issue with it was that driving it felt...different :P Which is a good thing I guess, but I suppose you get that whenever you change a car, e.g. found the clutch really heavy, brakes were really sensitive, etc... All stuff that I could get used to after a few hours driving it, hopefuly :P

And the panoramic roof is officially the coolest feature on a car, ever.

Going to look around a few different garages and dealers over the new couple of days, may test drive the 1.8. Loved the pull in the 2.2 but the first thing I noticed when I got back in my 1.2 Corsa was the amazing sound of petrol running through the engine haha

You found the clutch heavy?! Compared to what? When I test drove the 2.2 and had to get into my clio again afterwards it felt like I was on the flippin leg press! Then again the clio clutch was absolutely knackered

I'd definitely try reversing it before you buy (so when you scratch it it aint yours!) - of course you can get used to anything but I still find my car difficult to park forwards (cause I never do it) - backwards is alright but only cause I've got the cam.

Does anyone know which is longer between the 5dr and 3dr? Parkers has the 3dr as 20mm longer but that seems a bit odd?!

Haha yeah well the clutch in my Corsa is like pushing air compared to the Civic I tested. I've sat in my mates Clio (A '57 Campus Sport) and the clutch in that seemed very heavy aswell. I was starting to feel a lot more comfortable with it by the end of the test, which was what, no more than 15/20mins? So I'm gambling that it wouldn't take long to get to grips with.

As for parking, I thought it was ok to park forwards, obviously was a lot more conscious of how much larger it was than my Corsa and took a bit more care lol, but I can't reverse into a bay at the best of times and really didn't fancy attempting it. It's really something I need to make myself do lol, stupid it's not taught when your learning to drive:S Parallel parking with another car is, but unless your local test centre has a car park, which mine doesn't, then parking in a bay isn't covered at all. I understand they don't want you to scratch anyone elses car but surely it'd be better to learn that when you have a professional with you talking you through it instead of letting you figure it out for yourself :S lol.

I remember the first time I drove to Tesco after I passed, found an empty parking space and just thought :O lol.

You get used to the Civic very quickly. I have the 1.8 and I love it. I come from the great Skoda Fabia and the civic is a step up from that but only just . I find the car great and the clutch not that bad and the car amazingly fast and agile!

Yeah when I was driving it I was a bit worried abut how fast it would be so for a while I didn't want to really use my right foot:P Once I'd got a bit of a feel for the car and actually got the courage to put my foot down a bit, and considering I was going a relatively low speed in a high gear it pulled brilliantly Then trying it again in second gear and not resorting to granny driving it just felt awesome Didn't get a chance to test it on a motorway/A road which I'd hoped to do, would have felt a bit safer playing about with the throttle etc then.

Oh and I noticed what a lot of posts on here have mentioned about going faster than you think you are. I was making a concious effort to drive quite slowly and everytime I looked back down at my speed I was easily 5mph over, felt like I was just plodding along though lol.

And ^^ I've heard a lot of good things about the Fabia, but whenever I look at it I just feel , and that's before you look at the inside. I'm not a badge snob and I wouldn't have anything against buying a Skoda, but why do they have to make them so ugly lol.
