Thumbs down Hi...........and I have a problem..........

Hi, my first post here and I need help!!!

I dropped the key for my Honda Civic down a drainage gully at the weekend Click the image to open in full size. Honda want £193.87 for a replacement and recoding...... Click the image to open in full size. Click the image to open in full size. Click the image to open in full size.

Does anyone know if there is a way around replacing the key without going through Honda.

£193.87 is feckin daylight robbery.

I'm new to this forum, so I hope this post is the right place.

Hi and welcome!

Do you not have the second key? £193.87 does seem rather high. let's hope someone can help you on here.

Hi and welcome to civinfo.

Sorry to hear this.

Pehaps this is an option: eBay Motors: 2006 2007 2008 06 07 08 HONDA CIVIC KEY KEYLESS REMOTE (item 370054756353 end time May-31-08 14:09:06 PDT)

They claim you can program it yourself and it is a genuine Honda part. So you'd just need to get the blade cut.

I'd email them first to check compatibility.

For nearly £200 I'd be digging the drains up! bit scary as I cannibalized mine to make a flip key so if i needed a replacement - ouch! I hope the forum members can help you.

Thanks for the reply's so far, I spent an hour trying to get the key out with a fishing net, but with no luck, and it wasn't a very pleasant experience either.

Try a hook rather than a net. Failing that it's snorkel and flippers time.

Good luck.

Ta for that, I've Emailed them as it seems their blank is a 3 button affair, not sure if it would be compatible.

The third button seems to be a panic button. You never know though it may be ok, hopefully it will be.

Will one of these gadgets help?

PICK UP TOOLS, 2, FLEXIBLE GRABBER & MAGNET, LONG REACH on eBay, also, Hand Tools, Garage Equipment Tools, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 06-Jun-08 11:30:00 BST)

Press the end and little grabbing clasps protrude and grip the keys when the end is released. I've had one for years, only neede it about 3 times, but each time it was successful in retrieving dropped keys from a drain (2 times) and a small screw from behind an engine block. Worth it's weight in gold!!

I don't have the magnet attachment, but that looks as if it could do the job.

PS: This is the type I have...Spring Claw Flexible Grabber Tool on eBay, also, Special Tools Measuring Tool, Garage Equipment Tools, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 21-Jun-08 07:21:06 BST)

The gully is about 3 - 4 foot deep, the bottom is full of sediment and the water if filthy (you cannot see anything) add to that it rained quite hard last night so it will probably have been washed away.

I reckon that having been stuck under water for the electrons will be buggered by now as well even if I could get it back.

Well, it's messy, but your arm is about a two foot reach and the grabber is almost two foot.....just remember to tie a length of string around the grabber and your wrist in case you drop that as well!

That looks good, just need to get it cut and programmed. Can't be much for that, but choose your cutter wisely as I had a key ruined by Timpsons in Rugby!....and your Honda dealer shouldn't charge much for the programming?

This may help: Flip Key Cutting Sites

Your best bet is to get rid of most of the water in the gully, ok not an easy or pleasant job if you don't have a pump, so small bucket will have to do. At least then you have a small chance of seeing something.
This happened to me many many years ago, and I did get them back.
Good luck
