Buying a new Diesel Sport
Hi Guys, I have decided to opt out of the company car scheme and take the cash allowance
Love the look of the civic and the test drive was sweet !!! Had hoped to get a 57 plate for 13k but all the ones we have looked at are really poor ex rentals etc (all had missed their first services !!!!!!) looked at over 10 ! So now hoppin to get a new one for 16k which is my top limit, what do you think my chances are ? anybody had any joy at that price ? Might try the reverse auction web site; New Car Reverse Auction - About AutoeBid - How to save thousands on a new UK car - not Autobid Which looks good and when I spoke to them they said the max I would pay would be £16,100 (as I want it in black) Any feedback gratefully received Steve |

Have you tried the dealers for ex demo models....
As they get these subsidised by Honda they are sometimes more flexible Got mine this route NHB 2.2 Diesel with under 3k miles. The dealer did not allow solo test drives and it was in good nick (much better than ex rental/lease) Now has 34k miles and chewed two set of front tyres No more than the usual early car niggles which they have dealt with under warranty... |

Hi Steve and welcome to civinfo.
Although I have no personal experience of the reverse auction web site, I hope you get just what you are looking for. Good luck with your search. |

I think it's unlikely you'll get a dealer to drop to 16K for a new 2.2 Sport, does man you shouldn't try though
Or if you are close enough try Fords of Winsford Fords of Winsford. The Original Car Supermarket in Cheshire. |

To get the best deal from a dealer.....
1) Trawl the internet for the cheapest price on a new Civic. Take a print-off with you to the dealers. 2) Know the spec of the car you want, and the price you want to pay. Wait until the end of their sales quarter, and then haggle them into the ground. By waiting for the end of the quarter, with their Honda sales targets looming over them, you'll pretty much be able to buy at their cost (as I did), they made £1 on the car and that was before they added all the extra bits & pieces that I made them include in the deal. The dealer's got to understand a few things from the onset to get him in the right mood to sell... 1) You want to buy a car, and you're not just a tyre kicker. 2) You want to buy the car from him because he's local and you're sure he can do you the right deal. 3) You have the funds and are ready to spend them. Next you have to take up a bit of his time, take a test drive, make him do some work on prices etc. Then make it known to him that unless it's a great deal, you'll go and spend your money elsewhere! By this stage he'll already be wondering what to spend his commission on, and he'll really want to keep you as a customer. Make him squirm, make him go back to his manager over and over again to get the best price! Remember, if you're going to haggle, be prepared to shake hands/sign on the dotted line if he comes through with what you've asked for. Be prepared to do the deal there and then. Don't get the price you wanted and then "go and think about it for a few days" Most importantly, keep things jovial, polite & positive. You won't get a great deal by pounding your fist on the desk and demanding. You need to get the salesperson on your side, working for you! Now, armed with this knowledge, go forth and buy a car! |

Thanks for the advice Damien, I have been putting the squeeze on my local dealer but he is currently refusing to go lower than £16,796.75 !
So it looks as though I am going to give the auction a try, nothing ventured nothing gained Makes me a bit nervous but if I can save £700 - £800 then its worth it, thats a lot of diesel !! Steve |

One more thing I forgot to say, be prepared to walk away if you're not getting the deal you're looking for!
Hey Steve, have you not considered accepting his price if he can throw in some extras... fogs, 3 years free servicing, etc? There might still be a deal to be had? Make the salesguy jump through a few more hoops before you give up on him! Damian |

Not every one's choice, but I went the pre reg route-with 3 miles on the clock but sat in valuable showroom space I was able to eventually more or less get the deal I wanted.
I would say my strategy pretty much mirrored DamienScotts negotiating recommendations.I think with a pre reg, presumably as the dealer owns the car there is more incentive for flexiblity(my sales guy was top notch as I know I really pushed him and made it clear at what point I would have to walk away-he even told me later his manager had warned him not to let that guy(me) leave the premises without closing a deal |

Dealers pre-reg cars in order to hit their sales targets from the manufacturer. They'll already have claimed their marketing kickback/commission from Honda for any pre-reg cars that they have on their forecourt, and WILL have more flexibility on price. This is ok, as long as you don't mind being owner number 2 on the log book.

Cheapest price for a 2.2 Sporty with metallic on Drivethedeal.com is £16175.30 so I think you will be lucky to find a dealer to do it at £16000.
Thats not to say its impossible though, you just need to find a dealer with a car they need to shift to make a particular sales bonus, I got my brand new 57 plate 1.8 Sport in October for just £13700 and the cheapest price on Drivethedeal at the time was over 14.5k. I was prepared to be flexible on colour and looking at exactly the right time when the dealer had 3 cars they needed to sell before month end. Keep searching. |
