Time to replace the timing belt?

Hi guys,

Was'nt sure whether to put this here or the Engines & Transmission section...

Basically I have just received a letter from a dealership I've recently visited for recall work advising me that it's time to have the timing belt replaced in my car, which they can do for £200.

The thing is, the car is only 18 months old and has only done 17,500 miles, so surely it's a bit soon for this isn't it? It's not even due for it's second service for months yet!

Have they made a mistake or should I be getting my car booked in?

Sounds odd.

Call another dealer and ask to be sure.

Eh thats not right. It should advise in the servicing schedule. Its usually around the 60k mark. Is this your first Honda?

Unless there is a fault with a batch of belts and they want to change them ASAP.

And he has to pay £200? If that was the case I would expect Honda to be footing the bill!

You are right.

Must be a mistake - worth double checking though.
You don´t want it breaking and them telling "we told you so".

I was thinking that if this wasn't your first Honda then the dealer maybe referring to a previous car you had owned but now i'm thinking that the dealer in question is not the one you purchased the car from? And you didn't have it serviced there? And when it was in for the recall work someone at the dealer put the wrong milage in, so instead of say 17,000 they put 71,000 which would then bring up on their systems that your timing belt needs replaced.

I bet thats whats happened.

Why don`t you just phone the dealer and query it

Sounds like an admin error from the dealer, you dont have a cambelt on your engine if you have a 1.8 i-VTEC.

Think you'll find it's a general mail shot that has been sent to all customers in error!

Cheers
Chris

Yes, timing chain driving the cam on the 1.8 - see picture.

The lack of a cambelt is one of the reasons I like the Honda engines as You dont have to worry about regular cam belt changes or it braking. If you look at an Alfa forum about half the threads / discussion is about cam belts !!

The Honda engine does have an auxillary belt driving the alternator etc. Not sure how often the aux belt is supposed to be replaced, but it will be a lot more than 17,000miles..

Cheers for all your replies guys, I figured it must be an admin error on the dealership's part. To answer your question Angie, this is not the dealership I bought the car from as that dealership would never return my calls about getting this recall stuff done!

As it happens, I'm going to have to call the dealership that sent me this letter anyway, as in 'upgrading' the driver's side door lock, they've managed to break it. Brilliantly, I never had a problem with it before the recall, but now it won't unlock from inside the car (you have to use the central locking instead) - which is the fault their work was meant to prevent! Excellent work there!

I suppose that Honda will change the belt that it does have for free if you have the Honda Fixed price servicing plan (Honda Happiness)? £500 all in for 5 years, I have this plan and I'm not expected to pay for this, and wont!

Is the timing belt/chain included in the Honda Happiness? I think I will check that when I get home but I didn't think it did. So you would have to shell out for it.
