Just thinking about UK built and the problems we have, I was talking to my old man about this the other day, it seems the Civic has its fair share of problems, is that because its a new model, or because its built in Britain. Now you may argue there are plenty of car manufacturers building good quality cars in Britain, Toyota, Nissan. Perhaps Jag, Land Rover, Range Rover. Now at the top end you expect quality,so lets disregard Jag and RR (not me Range Rover), Land Rovers are always going to look thrown together, they're rustic, so that leaves us Honda, Toyota and Nissan. If Nissan and Toyota can get a reliable car out to the public why not Honda. I have given this some thought, is it because Toyota and Nissan came into Europe and started from a blank canvas using Japanese work ethics, concepts etc. whereas Honda were working with Rover sharing plant, engines etc. is it the ghost of British Leyland work practices that is still evident that is causing the problems in Swindon? Or is it just the fact that it is a radically different looking car that is going to have some teething issues.

Perhaps between them they found a 3rd way, rather than Honda sink to Rover levels or Rover climb to Honda levels, they agreed that they would leave problems in the cars that they knew where there but would fix when requested.

OOooh, factory tour would be excellent. We could take a spirit level and show them that the place where they do the door fitting for the civ is on a slope!
When I was reading all the paperwork that came with the civic I noticed that on the handover checklist in the service book was "Tour of Dealership including the workshops (if requested)". Shame I missed that one. |

With regards to the problems civics suffer with, I have a thought or two I would like to share...
There does seem to be a lot of problems, but I think you will find that you will have re-occuring problems within any 'owner's club' with a decent population. I had a quick look around the 'net and found many forums similar to this with complaints about faults and quality... Yes, mine has had it's fair share, but not nearly as bad as my old Clios! And I think a large part is due to the fact this is a brand new car. Most cars are progressive geneartions, each very similar to the last, of the same basic car. A change here or there. They have had 5, 10 or 15 years to sort all the little problems out. The civic has been designed from the bottom up, and Honda were not sure if they were to give the car a new name as it is nothing like any previous civic. I think you will find the next generation will be a lot better. The shocks will be sorted by then, there will be an aux-in, the rear screens will be sorted to reduce leaks, etc etc. In summary, i think there are some underlying problems, but that's just the price we pay to have such a cool, different car. By buying such a new, radical car, we are in a way guinnea pigs, testing the car so Honda can improve the next models. |

I am still waiting for my civic but my RX-8 which I had from new in 2004 only ever had one problem and that was with an illuminated gear knob.
The only other time car saw the dealers was for a service. It is possible to create a new vehicle without major problems, it just seem that we brits can't. |

I was one of the first on the road with the Ford Focus when it was first built, it had two recalls for things that hadn't affected my car, apart from that I had no problems with it at all it was the best car I have ever owned for the drive and reliabilty. It didn't even have niggly things for instance it drives me mad when I put my windows down on the Civic and they come back up soaking wet and smeared they used to come up clear on the Focus, I never used to get a shower everytime I opened the boot when it had been raining or a wet seat when I opened the door to get in, I think the Civic has had a far more wider range of problems then most new builds and as much as I love the look of the car Im not sure anymore I did the right thing in buying one. Because of all the problems I have had with not one but two of them many friends cant believe I havent got rid of it! Not a very good advertisement in my circle of friends for Honda. I have lost count of the times people have said to me "but I thought you couldn't go wrong with a Honda"!
The fault llies at the door of the designers. |

Toyotas
Dont agree with Toyota = Quality. 54 plate Yaris had a knocking in engine and 56 Corolla had full electrical failure with a Tom Tom!
